Pare 6 THE WESLEYAN DECREE Wednesday, May 6, 1964 Upperclassmen Swamp Freshmen In Field Day By DAVID REEVES After being soundly defoattd by the upperclassmen during initiation week at the first of the year the freshmen at Wes leyan were out to even up the score. Instead of the usual foot ball game, basketball «ame, and tug of war the field day would consist of men and wo men’s volleyball games, a 100- yard dash, an 880-yard run, men and women’s softball games, and a mile relay. The first event wa.s the men’.s volleyball game. In the first game the upix;rclassmen top pled the high-headed freshmen but the fres'timen were fli i-.T- miaied to make the upperflas men bow and battled back to win the second game in the best of three series. 'I’he uppcr- claissmen smashed all hope with a resounding victory in the final game. The women’s volleyball game was a different story. The upperclass women took the first game in a close battle. N:>t to be outdone the freshmen wo men came back to take the second and final games and even up the score at one event for the freshmen and one for the upperclassmen. In the 100-yard dash the up perclassmen swept the first four places to capture the event. Led by f^d Lewis’ amaz ing 10.5 second time, the ujiper- classmen captured the event with ease. Mike Pratt, Konnie Brockenbrough, and Kay Rob inson followed lOd across the finish line. The upperclassmen scored an upset victory in the 880-yard run taking first and third places. Bruce Sharer led the iippercla.ssmen with a sens i- tional time of 1:49. Doug Grose- close came in sei >nd, followed by Mike Pratt. The men’s softball game was a close battle. The game wss originally scheduled Tor scvc i innings but went eight when the score waii tied 8-8 in the 7t!i, The uppcrclas-^men scored tv.'o runs iin the top of the 8th and held the freshmen score less to gain the victory. The women’s softball game '■ as to be five innings but had to be called after two because of the time involved. The Treshmen women could never t up to bat! At the end of f'.'o innings of play the score v' as 10-1 in favor of the upioer- class women, Gloria Sanders I'd the upperclass women with her fine pitching backed by a tight infield that made a triple play in the bottom of the sec ond innig, 'I'l’.C' last event was won by the freshmen. In the mile relay Denny Seybert and Bob Yel- verton turned in very fast times on the first two legs and were supported on the last two legs by Doug Groseclose and Chuch Wright to give tliem the victory. Congratulations to the upper classmen in their victory. They captured 5 of the 7 events to keep their prestige up in the student ranks. BUZZ BARKER is definitely a golfer as displayed by his strike in the Field Day Softball game as the freshmen played the upperclassmen. Campbell Clobbers Bishops, 14-2 Campbell College, led by the Bishops, 14-2, in a night game baseman. It was first performed at the University of Virginia on April 13, 1943, and has since received performances throughout the world, becom ing one of the most widely- performed choral composi tions of the 20tli century. During his graduate study he has worked as a Laboratory research assistant with East man Kodak Company for five years. He has conducted class room recitation sections and assisted in the general chem istry laboratory program for three years at the University of Rochester. A member of Phi Alpha Mu, he will share the chem istry program at Wesleyan with J. W. Kilgore, Assistant Professor of Chemistry. His particular field of interest is physical chemistry and re action kinetics. He is married to the former Shirley Hurst who holds a B, M. degree from Eastman School of Music in piano. They have two small child ren. Active in the Congrega- at Campbell College. Banman struck out 11 Bishop batters in gaining the victory. NIGHT THEME 10 - MIDNIGHT was put out at second on a fielder’s c'hoice hit by Ed Shultz. Shultz reached second on a single by Roop. Dave Reeves then doubled against the right field fence to drive in Shultz and Roop. The Bishop lead was short lived as Campbell came back with six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Campbell scored their six runs on three hits and three errors by the Bishop infield. A1 Rexroad relieved John Edgerton in the fourth inning with the score 12-2 in favor of Campbell. A1 turned in his best performance of the season as he held Campbell to two hits and two runs in the 4th through the 9th innings. During this time he struck out seven Campbell batters to put a sparkle in an otherwise dismal evening for the Bishops, Bob Roop led the Bishop bat ters with a perfect night at the plate, getting two hits in two times at bat.
