Pare 4 THE WESLEYAN DECREE Tuesday, May 19, 1964 Bishops Take Victory Over St. Andrews Wesleyan College avenged an earlier 7-6 loss to St. Andrews College by trouncing them 8-4 on the losers field Tuesday after noon. The Bishops rapped the Knights’ pitching for eight hits in gaining their first victory of tlie season. Ed Schultz, who has had many close games slip by his fingers, pitched a sensational game. He struck out five, allowed six hits, walked only two men, and al lowed no earned runs, as he went the rout to victory. Rusty Lancaster, Bob Roop, and Ronnie Ragsdale led the Bishops at the plate. Lancaster led all hitters with three hits in five trips to the plate. He also drove in one run on a ground ball to the short stop in the fifth inning. Bob Roop also had a good day at the plate. He had one hit in four trips to the plate. Roop doubled in the eighth driv ing in two runs. Ronnie Ragsdale went two for four at the plate and drove in one run in the second inning on a double down the right field line. Neither team scored in ihe first inning as a pitching dual developed between Schultz and the Knights’ starter. Cole. Lan caster led off and grounded out to the pitcher. Cherry struck out, and Seybert grounded out to the short stop to end the tap of the first inning. The Knights could get nothing started as Bchultz set tliem down in order. Von Settlemyre grounded out, Cren shaw struct out and Lee Settle- myre grounded out to end the inning. Bob Roop drew a v/alk on the top of the second inning. Run ning for Roop, Ray Robinson Stole second, and reached third on an error by the Knights’ catcher. Reeves popp>ed-up to the first baseman and Everett flied out to right field. With two outs and a man on third, Ronnie Ragsdale doubled down the right field line driving in Robinson. Schultz flied out to the center field to end the top of the second inning. St. Andrews struck luck in the bottom of the second with three runs to make the score 3-1. Hughes reached first on an ern>r by the Bishops’ third baseman. Hughes then stole second base McRae singled moving Hughes to third. Hughes scorod on an error by the Bishops’ catcher. Knupp pof)ped up to the short stop. Little struck out. Dawson and Cole walked. With ths bases loaded Von Settlemyre doubled to drive in two runs. Crenshaw grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning. Lancaster singled to start the third inning, but he was thrown out trying to steal second. Cherry and Nelson grounded out to end the top of the third. Lee Settlemyre reached first on an error by the Bishops’ third baseman. He was thrown out at second when tried to steal. Hughes and McRae flied out to end the inning. First Annual Concert Is Set This Evening Tlie Wesleyan Singers, under the direction of Dr. WiUiam Sasser, and tlie Wesleyan Sym phonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Peter Ger- schefski, will join forces to pre sent their first annual Com mencement Concert on Tuesday evening, May 19, at 8:15 p. m. in tlie Student Union on the campus of North Carolina Wes leyan College in Rocky Mount. The public is cordially invited to attend this event which is free of charge. The Wesleyan Singers, com posed of 53 voices, wiU present a lerformance of Gustav Holst’s “Festival Te Deum” as their major work of the evening. In addition, they will sing two Russian church anthems, “Sal vation Is Created” by Tschcs- nokoff and “Blessings of Peace” by Arkangelsky. The wind ensemble will per form Gustav Holst’s Second Suite for Military Band, Op. 28b. The entire second half of tlie program will be devoted to a performance of Randall Thompson’s “The Testament of Freedom” for men’s voices and band. This work was writ ten in 1943 in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson and is a set ting of Jeffersonian texts from several historical documents. It was first performed at the Uni- veiTsity of Virginia on April 13, 1943, and has since received performances throughout the world, becoming one of the most widely performed choral compositions of the 20th cen tury. Tlie accompaniment, ori ginally for symphony orchestra, has recently been arranged by Dr. Tliompson for wind band, and it is tliis version which will bo performed. could not score in the bottom of the fourth as Schullz set them down in order. Seybert drew a v/alk to start tlie sixth inning. He ws thrown out trying to steal second. Roop flied out to right field. Reeves hit a triple off a light pole in left but was left stranded when Everett grounded out to end the inning. The Knights were held score less in the bottom of the sixth. Hughes singled to left and Mc Rae singled to left. Schultz then bore down and Knupp, Little, and Dawison flied out to end the inning. The Bishops were unable to score in the seventh. Ragsdale struck out, Schultz grounded out, and Nelson grounded out. St. Andrews scored one run to make the score 4-2. Cherry struck out but reached first when the ball went by the catcher; Lancaster reach ed third on the same play. Sey bert walked to load the bases. Roop then drove a line shot to right-center field for a double) which drove in Lancaster andl Cherry. Reeves di’ew a walk. Everett reached first on a field er’s choice and Reoves went to tliird on a throwing error by the shortstop. Ragsdale struck out. Schultz then drove a high fly ball deep into right lield allowing’ Reeves to tag-up at third and score. Nelson struck out to end the inning. Schultz struck out two Kniglits and got a third to ground out to smash any hopes' they had of coming back in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Bishops scored again in the ninth to increase their lead. Lancaster doubled to right cen ter to start the innmg. Seybert flied out to c'-:nter allow ing Lancaster to score putting the Bishops in a commanding lead, 8-4. Roop reached first on an error by the Knights’ short stop but Reeves struck cut to end the inning. Schultz nailed the door shut as he forced three straight St. Andrews batters to ground out to end the game. Congratulations to the Bishops’ baseball team from the Decree.
