SCHOOL SPIRIT FOR ATHLETICS IMPROVES
By Steve HdU
I believe that congratulations
are In order for most students
at Wesleyan College. Fm speak
ing of the school spirit that has
been shown lately in our ath
letic program. There was a large
number of students at all of the
home soccer games and many
traveled long distances to see our
away games.
Stop and think about your
part as a student here. Cer
tainly you have academic res
ponsibilities, but have you thought
about your responsibility to your
fellow students? Have you con
tributed your share toward help
ing to encourage and stimulate
your fellow students’ morale and
spirit on the playing field? There ,
BELK-TYLER’S
Bill Bobbitt, junior tennis star, and Hilda
Floyd, an attractive freshman coed, admire a
$225.00 Ladies Hamiltm Watch, one of the
many selections in Belk-Tyler’s first floor
jewelry shop. The watch with a 22 jewel Swiss
movement features a face set with 20 eluant
diamcmds. See the many other watches, charms
and rings at Belk-Tyler’s.
Belk-Tyler s
of Rocky Mount
may have been one moment when
you cheered or yelled at the
right time to give them the needed
burst of determination to help
win the game even when the
going gets rough. To these stu
dents, we THE DECREE staff
say “congratulations” and con
tinue your support. To those Who
haven’t had time or perhaps
wefen’t interested, your support
is needed.
Basketball has begun now, the
season opening with a new gym.
There is no excuse for not seeing
and enjoying at least the home
games. When so~many students
have worked so diligently toward
making a better athletic program,
we should at least give them our
eager support.
On Thursday evening, December
3, the NCWC basketball team
opened regular season play by
meeting the Guilford College
Quakers at Greensboro. The Bis
hops ended up on the short end
of a 95-38 score.
Wesleyan faced a young, tal
ented, and well-conditioned club
which had scored more than a
hundred points in ej^ch of its
.previous outings. The Guilford
offense completely overwhelmed
Wesleyan by controlling the back
boards and hitting on a pheno
menal 73 percent from the floor.
The Wesleyan offense never got
started as Guilford employed a
fuU-court press throughout,
which the Bishc«)s failed to break
through. The press proved so ef
fective that Wesleyan was held
scoreless for ten minutes dur
ing the second half.
The Bishops switched to a
zone defense in the closing
minutes,, which proved effective
enough to keep Guilford from
reaching the century mark. The
final score is evidence of the
disappointing showing made by
Wesleyan in their first outing.
Charlotte College provided the
opposition on December 5 for
Coach Scalfs conference opener.
Pol the first thirty minutes Wes
leyan made the game a real
battle, but midway through the
second half the roof fell in.
The final score, 98-60, does
not tell the whole story. The
first half was “nip-and-tuck,”
and although Wesleyan only led
at one point, 19 to 18, they were
never more than a couple of bas
kets away. A three-point play in
the closing seconds, plus a shot
made at the buzzer, put Char
lotte ahead by nine points at
halftime.
Charlotte scored two quick
goals to begin the second half,
but they could not increase that
margin during the nest ten min
utes of play, sparked by the fine
play of Dave Brady, who wound
up the night with 22 points, Wes
leyan stayed within ten points of
the Charlotte 49erss during this
stretch. Midway through the half,
Brady sustained a slight knee
injury , when he hit the floor
after grabbing a rebound. Brady
had to leave the game, and soon
thereafter the Charlotte offense
caught fire, and Wesleyan was
not able to keep pace.
It was a frustrating and dis
appointing defeat for the Bis-
liops, who had their hopes set on
cringing a victory back home. The
team is not about to give up on
itself, however^, for they can
only give their best effort and
hope it brings a victory.
