This basketball season should
find the ACC title “up for grabs”
as never before, since the Duke
Blue Devils began their domina
tion in the early ’60’s. This fore
cast seems reliable for the fact
that all teams in the league
appear well-balanced, plut the
great number of new sophomores
expected to play a major role
this season. However, these
writers will hazard the follow
ing cage predictions: 1) Duke;
2^ Carolina; 3) Wake Forest,’
4) Maryland; 5) State’ 6) South
Carolina; 7) Virginia; 8)
Clemson.
Duke , with many returning
lettermen from the team , that-
placed second to U.C.L.A. In the
NX.A.A. race. With 6 foot 10

perienced guards leading the
way , Duke should win.
U.N.C., with soph sensation
Bob Lewis and All-American
Billy Cunningham, will give Duke
their stlffest competition. How
ever, these two alone will not
make up for inexperienced guards
and lack of strength , Still a
fine runner-up team.
Wake Forest , coached by the
colorful “Bones” McKinney, has
several returning lettermen,
paced by Ronnie Matts and Bob
Leonard, with Mcklnney coaching
this team must be given a big
edge in almost every game. Watch
out for Wake!

State, though Everett Case is in
his final year as head coach,
still must be considered a
second - division team. With
little height and practically no
bench State may be in for a
rough year.
South Carolina, with several
fine lettermen returning and a
new head coach in Frank
McGuire, could also be a sur
prise.
Virginia, after many years of
dismal defeats, expects to vacate
the A.C.C. cellar and could pos
sibly rise still higher.

The new gymnasium was the'
secene of a gallant losing effort
Tuesday night, as the Methodist
College Monoarchs pulled away
from the Bishops in the closing
minutes of the game to chalk
up a hard-earned 57-54 Dixie
Conference victory.
At 3:13 a 50-50 tie was brok
en at the foul line by Methodist
guard Phil Levine and the Bis
hops were never quite able to
retaliate, as time ran out, in
spite of some fine clutch shoot
ing by Mike Pratt and Clem
Josselyn,
High scorer for the Bishops,
in losing their second conference
game, was Lloyd Nelson with 13
points. He was followed by Dave
Brady and Mie Pratt who col
lected 9 and 8 points respecti
vely.
