PAGE 4 THE DECREE Hines, Watson Lead Caters Over Albemarle with the visions of sweet vic tories dancing In their heads, Wesleyan College’s basketball Bishops have begun the 1965-66 season. Wesleyan, In Its third year of In tercollegiate competition, has given a pre-season Indication of breaking the school’s losing bas ketball tradition with six letter- men and a host of talented looking newcomers on a squad that Coach Don Scalf calls his “finest ever.” Tonight Wesleyan travels to Laurinburg to tangle with Dixie Conference foe St. Andrews. Both finished huddled at the bottom of the regular season conference standings last year. Wesleyan will rate as the favorite. The“finestever” label also fits senior co-captain Don Hines, a 6-2 jumping jack from Selma. Scalf has built his fast-break ing offense around his tall-every- where forward and the potential shown last campaign by 6-5 soph omore George Watson, a Rocky Mount lad. To go along with this one-two scoring punch, the Bishops have a covey of speedy guards In sen iors Mike Pratt, co-captain and David Barbln, and newcomers Dana Dickens, a freshman from Snow Hill, and junior Pete House of Nashville, a transfer from Chowan Junior College, to make the running attack click. In a pair of exhibition victories over the Rocky Mount Men’sCity League All Stars and the College of Albemarle, Scalf s charges have been able to run and score. Defense has caused Scalf some .headaches, however. The Bishops, rolled by the All- Stars, 76-63, and then edged Al bemarle, 92-91. In both games Scalf made liberal use of his rookies. In the exhibition performances Hines lived up to his press clip pings by scoring 44 points in the two wins. Watson tallied 21 points in the two games. Both played sparingly. These men join 6-6 senior Dave Brady, one of the Dixie Intercol legiate Athletic Conference’s top rebounders, to make the Bishops strong off the boards. Sophlet- terman Wayne Brown (6-2) and freshman A1 Horne (6-1) give depth at the forwards. 6-6 fresh man Bill Waters is developing fast and spells for Brady in the pivot. Freshmen Phil Harrell and Bob Keyes give added front court support. Pratt and Barbln are regulars from last season. House and Dickens are giving both stiff tests to keep their starting jobs. Rook ies John Jenks and John Baker are other guards. Running ’n gunning is the way Scalf hopes his boys will be able to play. Outscoring the opposition is his only goal. Tourney The first annual DIAC volley ball tournament, held at Wesley an recently, was won by the Methodist College team In a close championship game with the Bishop squad, 21-18. The Wesleyan team, composed of Guy Turner, Don Hines, Denny "Patrick, Tom Davis, Bill Hearn, Blaine Adams, Timmy Troutman, and .Stiles Livengood, easily won their first two matches with Lynchburg and St. Andrews. Methodist also ran roughshod over their first two opponents, and thus set up a rematch of the field day event which brought the rotating trophy back to Wesleyan last month. The Monarch aggregation from Fayetteville sported several good set-up men and one ex cellent spike r. It was apparent that they had come to win, and win they did. Wesleyan was unable to play even fair volleyball for the first half of the match, and Methodist jumped into a 14-6 lead. Then, re- jniniscent of field day, the Bishops came back strong, gain ing an 18-17 lead, before Metho dist called time out to cool off the hot Wesleyan drive. Following the time out, which ap parently worked, Methodist pro ceeded to drop in three straight points to take the game and the tournament trophy. The Bishop squad, which was coached by Dr. Bauer and Mr. Music, had only three practices, but displayed good teamwork and hustle throughout the tournament. Wrestling Team Promises Good ’65-’66 Season The Wesleyan wrestling team has been practicing for the last three weeks without a mat, and last Monday a beautiful blue and gold 36’ by 36’ ensollte mat finally arrived. The team has been shaping up well under the guidance of Coach Bill Music, and promises to pro vide many exciting moments for spectators at the three home matches. i -J':’ Professors and Students . .
