PAGE 8. - THE DECREE. ■ FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 1966 Bishop Hurlers Open Season “Defense Shaping Untested hurlers and catchers are causing North Carolina Wes leyan Coach Moe Bauer a lot of pre-season baseball headaches. “Pitching and catching are 90 per cent of the game,” com mented Bauer,” and right now all our pitchers and catchers are untested. Experience Is the only answer so it may take us a while to get on our feet. How ever, there is some talent a. those positions.” On the other hand, all Is not gloomy in the Wesleyan camp. Defense and speed have looked good in pre-season practice, and Bauer is also counting on a Wes leyan club that can score some runs. “We have a few holes, but overall our defense is shaping up,” noted the school’s athletic director. “And we have pretty good speed and some boys who can hit the ball. Also, several freshmen, especially Jon Schultz, have been Impressive.” Heading the list of fine lelter- men returnees are outfielders Rusty Lancaster and Joe Wil liams, and third baseman Ron nie Ragsdale. Denny Seybert who played two years ago, is back at shortstop and letterman Ar thur (Butch) Ferguson will again handle first base. Top-notched newcomers are Schultz, a swift ballhawk who may do some pitching, C.' B. Daughtridge, a speedy catcher- in^ielder, and A1 Horne, another p.atcher-lnfielder prospect. Sophomores Nat Raley and Marty Sarra, both promising right-han ders, are the only returning moundmen. It will take time to see what they can do. Pushing Sarra and Raley for pitching assignments will be Berry Buck, Bob Lowry, John Carson and Gerald Williams, all right-handers. Joe Williams, a junior, is the club’s only south paw hurler and may do some pitching in addition to chasing flies. Right-hander Schultz could be a mound surprise. Catching duties will either go to Daughtridge or Horne. If Horne catches then Daughtridge will be moved to third, while Horne will play second-if he doesn’t work behind the plate. Sophomore John Morgan ^nd Steve Gordon are catcher reserves. Left-hander Ferguson will be stationed at first. The lanky 6-2 athlete handles a very slick glove but needs to improve with the bat. Seybert, a talented junior, could be the hitting star of the club. He’s also got power and handles himself well in the field. Ragsdale, a senior veteran, is probably the club’s stead*“st per former. He is adequate both with the bat and glove and has proven himself a capable third sacker. He may be moved to second if Horne gets the catching job. Freshman Bill Bradshaw Is an infield hopeful. In the outfield, Lancaster will be stationed in center, with Wil liams in right and Schultz In left. All have speed and adequate bats. Sophomore Kris O’Connor and freshman Butch Harvey are out field reserves. Second baseman Kris O’Connor and outfielder Denny Seybert warm up in preparation for the opening Base ball Season. Looking On By: David Lamm Spring spKjrts are in the midst of getting underway, and yet memories of a championship North Carolina Wes leyan basketball team are still fresh on campus. The Dixie Conference title was the first ever for a Bishop athletic group. Wesleyan fans may have a very short wait in get ting to cheer on another bunch of championship perform ers. The 1966 Wesleyan golf team has that title-glow about it. Coach Don Scalf, who also coached the Bishop basket- ballers, has seven good reasons for smiling—Lee Ball, Buzz Barker, Buck Roney, Jimmy Thornes, Phil Harrell’ Mike Hux and Tony DeMuth. The golf team began its season today at Campbell College. Ball, a heavy-set junior who is not eligible for con ference matches, is on the golf course what Don Hines was on the basketball court. The Rocky Mount lad can drive, use the irons and putt. He consistently breaks par and is one of the school’s finest athletes. His addition to the . Bishop swingers makes them a serious threat in the Dixie Conference. “Lee does it all well,” says his coach. Barker, a senior, and junior Buck Roney are returnees from last year s third-place Bishops. Both ranked among the best in the conference in 1965. Freshman Jimmy Thornes, a star golfer at Rocky Mount High last year, gives Wesleyan four fine golfers—all who rarely slip over 80. “Buzz handles his irons real well,” commented Scalf. And Buck is consistent. Thornes is young, but he has a lot of power and probably hits the ball harder and farther than anyone else on the team.” Junior Hux, Freshman Harrell and sophomore De Muth are 85-or-below golfers and will battle for the bottom two spots on the team. This year’s group of country-club swingers are worthy of the Wesleyan student body support. It could bring the schocl another championship. .
