Wesleyan Receives
Accreditation From
Southern Association
North Carolina Wesleyan College was granted
regional accreditation retroactive to 1960 by being
elected to full membership in the Southern Associ
ation of Colleges and Schools Wednesday, Nov. 30,
at the association’s annual meeting in Miami.
N. C. Wesleyan, the first North Carolina college
to be granted early candidate for membership status
by the association, thus achieved accreditation at
the earliest possible time after graduating the re
quired minimum of three classes. Wesleyan’s open
ing class in 1960, all freshmen, became its first
graduating class in 1964. The third class, freshmen
of 1962, graduated last May.
Word of the favorable vote
of the College Delegate Assem
bly, representing every ac
credited college in the Southern
region, came from President
Thomas A. Collins and A-
cademic Dean Jack W. Moore,
who are attending the as
sociation’s meeting at the Foun-
tainblcu Hotel in Miami Beach.

Chapel
Regulations
Changed
Several major changes nave
been made concerning chapel
attendance regulations and dis
ciplinary action connected with
failure to comply to the regu
lations, In a recent Faculty
meeting a measure was ap
proved whereby each student
at N, C. Wesleyan shall be
given three unexcused chapel
cuts per semester, and sanc
tions for absences beyond this
point shall be left up to the
Dean of Students.
This change represented the
most recent in a long line of
changes within the framework
of the policies governing chapel
attendance.
Last spring the faculty ap
proved a major change in the
disciplinary action for over
cutting chapeL At that time
they approved a measure which
stated that no student could
be penalized academically for
failure to attend chapeL
Prior to that time it was
possible for a student to have
it entered on his permanent
record, have quality points
taken from him^ or even be
suspended from school for
overcutting chapeL
It was also reported that
the faculty stemmed from a
recommendation they received
from the Religious Life Com
mittee (formerly the Chapel
Committee) regarding sanc
tions for chapel attendance. The
recommendations read as fol
lows:
(Con’t. on page 8)
At two o’clock that afternoon
what could well be the clash
of the century will take place
when the alumni basketball team
clashes with the faculty team,
although both teams are keep
ing their line-ups under lock
and key, it is safe to assume
that the alumni, who will be
have such stars from yester
year as Don Hines, Dapper-
Dave Brady, and Bill Garlowe,
plus some secret weapons from
their ranks to represent them.
The faculty, under the dir
ection of Robert Chafin, math
instructor turned coach for the
occasion, have at their disposal
such dynamic threats as Dr.
Hailey of the Religion Depart
ment, Mr. Gray the librarian,
and Mr. Lowenthal of the Lan
guage Department, plus Mr.
Scalf, Mr. Music and Dr,
Bauer of the Physical Education
Department who will likely be
substitutes.

Commission has made
every effort to see that
this weekend will be an
entertaining and joyous
one for each and every
alumnus who returns to
school Friday and Sat

close no names, he readily
admits that his starting line
up, aptly named the “FiveTons
of Fun", is something awe
some to behold. He also in
dicates that with a starting
team like this one, several
substitutes will be necessary
so that the faculty can have
a “finishing team,”
Later in the day, after the
linament and rub-downs to ease
the pain of sore muscles, the
alumni basketball team will join
the rest of the alumni for a
banquet to be held in the college
cafeteria. The banquet, which
will consist of Filet Mignon
and trimmings, will cost $1,75
per person and is open only to
Wesleyan Alumni and their
guests.
The Homecoming Dance,
which is being held in Tarry
town Mall, will begin at 9:30
and will feature a show by
popular recording star Mary
Walls. Music for the evening
will be provided by the Inmates
a popular dance group from
Raleigh. Cost for the dance
is $3,00 per couple.
The dance, which is semi-
formal, will be highlighted by
the crowning of Wesleyan’s first
Homecoming Queen and the pre
sentation of her court. The
Queen will be selected from
a group consisting of two re
presentatives of each of the
current classes at Wesleyan,

CHRIS FELTS, a Junior transfer from Chowan Junior College,
has led the Bishops basketball team in scoring in their first
three games. With G1 points in the three games, Chris has shown
early that he is a welcomed addition to the team. (See further
