(Con’t. from page 1) “This early recognition ful fills our fondest hopes and re wards our determined drive for recognition of the quality we have sought to build into our young college,” Dr. Collins said in announcing the decision. “We are filled with apprecia tion for all our friends in Nash and Edgecomlie counties, In the Methodist Church, and for the many friends everywhere who have worked, contributed, and prayed for this achievement,” said Luther W. Hill of Tarboro, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “This recognition will impel us toward new goals.” College officials explained that from registration of the first student, their clearly re cognized primary goal has been accreditation. They have work ed in cooperation with re presentatives of the Southern Association from that first year. Dr. Gordon Sweet, ex ecutive secretary of the College Section of the association, has visited the campus several times. The first review committee visited the campus in October 1963 under the chairmanship of Dr. Donald Dearborn, president of Catawba College. Two months after this visit, N. C. Wesleyan was elected as a Can didate of membership. A self-study was undertaken during 1964-65 with Dr. Peter Gerschefski, assistant profes sor of music, serving as chair man. This was completed dur ing the summer of 1965. Another visiting committee spent several days on campus during April 1966 to examine the college in light of the self- study and the association’s Guidelines for Accreditation. This committee, headed by Dr. Francis Bonner, academic dean and vice president of Furnun University, made its recom mendations to the committee on credentials. Dean Moore, in commenting on the final vote of the as sembly, said, “Already the trustees, administrative offi cers, faculty and students have accepted as their goal the en hancement of great teaching and learning atwortncaronna wes- leyan College. Strengthened by this approval, we shall move forward in all areas of the college life.” (Con’t. from page 1) “Whereas the faculty voted to eliminate academic sanc tions from chapel attendance and recommended that alter nate attendance proposals be made, we recommend for fac ulty approval: 1. That the Dean of Students be authorized to deter mine those students who should be excused from chapel attendance. a. That two absences be permitted each sem ester without excuses. b. That for a third unexcused absence, the stu dent be placed on room re striction from 7:00 P. M. to 7:00 A. M. for a period of four days. c. That for a fourth and each subsequent unex cused absence, the student be on room restriction from 7:00 P. M. to 7:00 A. M. for a period of eight days. 2. That enforcement of the restriction a. for the resident student, be the responsibi lity of the Residence Hall CounciL b, for the day student, be the responsibility of the Student Life Association, who would take action in case the student should violate the restriction.” According to Dr. Wilde, Dean of Students, the present con ditions allow for “disciplinary action which can be determined on the basis of each individual case.” Dr. Wilde sees this as far superior to having a set punishment due to the fact that it will give him the freedom to take the offenders reason for the unexcused ab sence into account.
