THE IMSCREE, Page 2 EDITORIAL We the staff of the Decree in a moment of re flection over the past year would like to take this opportunity to thank all those persons who have offered both their services and their cooperation. We appreciate your support in times of crises. However, at the same time we can not apologize for our effort to seek the truth and to portray it in it’s various forms to the members of the Wesleyan Community. We have attempted to aggravate these same people into action. Sometimes we have been successful and others we have only succeeded in bringing the facts into the open, but this also is a measure of success. Finally we charge the students of Wesleyan with the responsibility for aiding in the growth and de velopment of this paper. We challenge them to take the time to not only be concerned but to do something about each and every problem which may arise. Wesleyan is more than capable of deal- ing with any situation which may arise. CHANGES MADE... The following changes have been • made as of April 30, 1968 on our graduation re* quirements. These changes are an innovation which is in line with the May term for next year. In general terms, the changes in graduation re quirements will give students more opportunity to elect their own courses and will reduce • the number of required courses. Graduation Requirements Required Courses ♦English Composition n (or demonstrated profi ciency) - 3 s. h. Religion 1 and any other 3 hours in Religion or Phi losophy - 6 s. h. ♦Foreign Langmges - In termediate level (or demon strated proficiency)- 0-12 LETTER TO THE EDITOR s. h. Physical Education - 4 s. h. Total Maximum Require ment - 25 s, h. Divisional Requirements Only lower' level courses that carry 3 or more semester hours will satisfy these re quirements. Two courses in the Division of a student’s major field in separate areas, but not in the major. Two courses in each of the remaining Divisions in sepa rate areas. Courses taken in the May term will not apply to Divi sional requirements. ♦Exemptions will be de termined by the respective de partment through exami nations given annually just prior to the Fall term. Wilde Addresses Students The student assembly held on the 30th of April was the oc casion for Dean Wilde’s annual address on the status of student affairs. Dean Wilde started with a few comments about the apathetic attitude of some of Qur students. It seems that he has decided that the best policy is to take those students who show an active interest and to then pursue the interests which they reflect. He then gave some of the statistics compiled by the rec ords office. Wesleyan had a 2.28 overall quality point av erage for the first semester. The most outstanding academic units on the campus are the upperclasswomen of North Hall and the “townies,” who tied for first place with an average of 2.43. The "duds” of the cam pus seem to reside on the third floor of Edgecombe Hall, for it was this group that ob tained the lowest average. The most outstanding student aca demically was next year’s SGA President, Jess Blackman, who exhibited a straight “A” aver age. The Dean went on to cite the growth of the SGA and the active participation of the students on three commit tees in cooperation with the faculty. He mentioned the at tempt to create a new com mittee which would actually be able to advise the faculty as to the opinions of the student body on academic affairs. It is hoped that the great amount of confidence placed in the SGA by the college will help to build a strong tradition of student government here. He stated that the problem seemed to be in the lack of participation on the part of the students, and OFFICIAL STUDKNT NKWSIV^mm OF NORTH CAROUNA WESLEYAN COLLEGE EDItCA in chief llowhrty MANAfflNG ENTMl MJchiid Baott BUSINESS MANACSR Crtberine Hoaracd advertising manager Jbd liaitlD ORCULATKXf MANAGER Tony D«Muth, Jr. PHOmmAPHER Baiter Smitt FEATURE STAFF—Rkh Mot*, Steve Smith, Sheri Lyndi, Shirley HildArand, Ginger Massey NEWS STAFF — Marla Gargano, Sarah AAew, Virgloia Hall, Jean Gurganus SPCXtrS STAFF Donnie Qawford, Jim Gfll OFFICE STAFF Ledand, Susan Dixon CIRCULAHW staff — TWdy Wall, Nancy Greah, Jim Fiioe DECREE PAGE C. Dr. Wilde left it up to the students to demand that they have a strong and repre sentative government, and that all of the various aspects of student life be conducted in a manner which was both pleas ing and beneficial to them. These demands should likewise be carried to the office of the Dean of Students, but they should originate with and be the vital concern of the students. He then moved on to prob lems with the food services which, almost every student "feels” every day. Again it was suggested that the food is not the best, but then again it is not the worst for a school of this size.
