OCTOBER 11, 1968 THE DE ‘DARLING’ N MORAN moqr art-► u ^ , ^ must be and has iQrr,o PAGE 3 by SEAN MORAN "It’s a shame that one can no longer support a library without encom passing it with a gamb ling casine.” Indeed, it is a shame, and this is but one of the cunningly poignant remarks made, in the movie “Darling,” against Britain’s stale and petty aristocracy. The idea of supporting any art merely for social status and totally ignor ing the inherent aesthetic qualities of the art be comes tragic. Even more is the fact that tragic most art must be and has been controlled by the rich who care nothing for the artists involved ex cept the question of whe ther or not the artists are good in bed. It seems then, that the promulga tion of the arts has re sulted in social climb- ing ^ and the buying and selling of one’s affec tions and one’s soul. Her character is well- stated; her climb up the social ladder is engross ing, and the viewer real izes after a few moments of film that she not only knows how to employ her beauty but her intelli gence as well. She well deserved the Academy A- ward that she won for this performance, if not for the insight she had into her lines, at least for her mere presence. Although In one of his most know ing performances, Dirk Bogard excels as the in tellectual, in direct con trast to the role played by Julie Christie, Bogard was very convincing as the understanding pater nal image; he understood the role, a role which probably reflects his own character. one is reluctant to say it, it must be said neverthe less that America’s stock of actors and actresses cannot compete with that of Great Britain. On September 28, the “Battling Bishops” lost to St. Andrews 6-1 with Ralph Thomas scoring Wesleyan’s point of the day on a free kick. The Wesleyan - Campbell game of Wednesday, Oct. 2, had all the appear ances of a repeat per formance, only worse. Failing to play as a team cost the Bishops another game, the score being 12- 1 at the end of four quar ters of an exhausting and futile struggle. The only high point of the game for Wesleyan was a field goal made by C, B. Daut- ridge on a throw-in by A1 Horne during the sec ond quarter. This play could easily be consider ed Wesleyan’s only true play of the entire game; the only one that paid off, that is! As always, there are numerous and varied rea sons for the Bishop’s de feat: inexperience, in juries, and poor plays be ing among the ever-pre sent ones. Granted, these reasons could ham per ev en the best soccer team once in a while. How ever, the proper train ing and practice produce the skilled, knowledge able players who are less likely to trip over the ball, kick their own team mates, and forget their own team’s plays. Exper ience, on the other hand, can only be gained by playing, making sure that the mistakes of one game are not carried over into the next. Even with proficiency, a team must have a fight ing spirit of its own, for team spirit is the basic ingredient of school spir it. Service (Continued from Page 1) ihree speakers were sumed with more hymns presented as reporters of correspondents. Their topic was Satan, and each represented a different position in the discussion, the title of which was "The Bogey Man Will Get You ^ If You Don’t Watch Out”, The first speaker discussed Satan the per son, his methods and at tributes, and summed up the myth of the Devil as it exists today. The second speaker listed and defined the seven deadly sins. The third speaker rep resented the "Church militant”, and discussed the best methods of de fense against the Devil’s temptations. The speak ers were billed as cor respondents for the "The Divine Universal Time Service”, and held the attention of the congre gation very well.
