Bishops Bow To Knights
St. John
N. C. Wesleyan Bishops
lost to the St. Andrews
College Knights in a bas
ketball game by a score
of 79-81, Wednesday
night, January 29 in Ever-
ret Gymnasium. How
ever, the final score re
lates little of the excite
ment which characteriz
ed the game.
Starting line-up for the
Bishops was Dell Cart
wright, Jerome Brown,
Jimmy Dixon, Harold Sut
ton, and Roger Taylor.
Wesleyan controlled the
jump at center as Taylor
tapped the ball to Sutton
who passed it to Dixon.
Dixon put the ball in for
the first two points in the
game. Fast team work
coupled with their ability
to out-maneuver the
Knights’ man-to-man de
fense enabled the Bishops
to remain in the lead dur
ing the first seven min
utes of play. Taylor ex
hibited his usual ball-
shooting efficiency while
Sutton with his good posi
tion on the opponent’s
boards led both teams in
the number of individual
rebounds retrieved.
Drawing the Bishops’
defense off balance and
never giving its offense
a chance to set up, the
Knights gained and main
tained the lead throughout
the remainder of the first
half. Trailing by 12 points
at one time during the
first half, the Bishops
narrowed the lead to 6 as
the first half ended with
Wesleyan, 40; St. An
drews, 46.
Roger Taylor led the
Bishops in scoring with
12 points while Harold
Sutton accumulated 10;
Jerome Brown, 9; Jim
my Dixon, 6; and substi
tutes, Dana Dickens, 1
and Wayne Horne, 2.
Except for Wayne
Horne’s substitution for
Dell Cartwright, the
starting line-up during
the second half remained
the same. During the first
eleven minutes of the
game, the Knights accu
mulated a 12 point lead;
however, by the fine out
side shooting of the Bi
shops, led by Dixon and
Taylor, and the tap-ins
by Brown, the opponent’s
lead was narrowed to 3
six times during the last
nine minutes of play. The
skill Sutton demonstrat
ed on the boards during
the first half was again
evident in his second half
performance. The pres
sure mounted; the specta
tors were wild with anti
cipation with 1:20 left in
the game. The scoreboard
showed Wesleyan behind
by 4. In a tap-in. Brown
narrowed the lead to 2.
Taylor sank a foul shot
with 26 seconds left to
play. A Knight was foul
ed, made oneof two shots;
the lead was again 2. The
game ended as Wesleyan
lost to St. Andrews, 79-
81.
