TUESDAY, OCT. 21, 1969 THE DECREE PAGE 3 Bishops Clawed By Wildcats The N. C. Wesleyan Soccer team lost to the Davidson Wild cats 6-0 on Friday, October 17. The Bishops were hopeful of an ■ upset marking their second win, but a marked defensive weak ness in the first half left the halftime score at 3-0. Dur ing the second half Wesleyan exercised much more ball con trol, yet still failed to score. Though this was the Bishops’s last home game, the number of Wesleyan’s supporters in at tendance was disappointing. Special recognition should go to Charlie Hancock, who, in his first season appearance, did a fine job offensively. Several Hancock shots were stopped just at the goal. The Bishop’s offense was noticably improved in Friday’s game with several shots missing the Wildcat goal by only a few feet. Wesleyan’s freshmen soccer players, compromising almost half of the ream, are promising Greek Powderpuff By the Sisterhood of Pi Spsilon Wesleyan’s two football teams had their first and only scrimage of the year last Sat urday, October 18, in the “foot ball stadium.” The sisterhood of Pi Epsilon challenged the Brotherhoods of Alpha Delta Chi and Nu Gamma Phi. In ac cepting the challenge, the two fraternities agreed to play by Pi Epsilon’s rules which in cluded: 1) Pi Epsilon makes all the rules 2) Boys mustwear jerseys 3) No tackling allowed ^Call-Downs’ (Continued from Page 2) rival, she was campused for a week. Her reason for being late was that a very close friend had died and she hadbeenwalk- ing on the campus grounds, trying to cope with an emotion al upset. One of the ground rules for late Freshmen is the placing of a call to the Res ident Counselor when they ex pect to be late. This was a consideration when her “call downs” were given. It is highly improbable that even an upper- class woman would have called under the same circumstances. If it is true that the purpose of the “call down” system is to instill responsibility in the student, it would seem that at least some effort would be made to evaluate the situation from both sides. If the system is to be continued, it is hoped that in the future more considera tion would be taken for the stu dent. Initiating a certain num ber of grace minutes per se mester for lateprivilegeswould eliminate much of the present feeling that the rules of the system are too strictly enforc ed without exception and in dividual consideration. PEPSICOLA You've Got A Lot To Live Pepsi's Got A Lot To Give 4) Two hand touch for boys, one hand touch for girls 5) Boys must hand off - no pass ing. 6) Only 8 boys allowed on the gridiron at a time while the girls may have an unlimited number 7) The boys goal is to face the sun during both halves 8) The game will consist of two twenty minute halves 9) Girls may have unlimited time outs—the boys none. 10) Boys must count to three before crossing the line of scrimage 11) Pi Epision may change or add to the rules at any time. All rules were adhered to precisely, because of the un biased efforts of the referees- Miss Gearhart, Dr. Baxter and Mr. Lowenthal, Coach Donnie Crawford led the Pi’s to a smashing 12-12 victory over the Chi’s and the Phi’s. Martha Polley and Mary Kemp scored touchdowns for the sorority while Phil McPhail and Fred die Dixon scored for the frat ernities. Many penalities were called against the brotherhoods for such things as unnecessary use of the hands, roughing the quarterback, tackling, unneces sary roughness, and illegal passing of the ball. At present, the worst disad vantage of the team is a lack of experience, but this year’s freshmen are quickly gaining this much-needed factor. Team spirit among the soc cer players is rising and with their continued effort, our team will present a tough challenge to such teams as St. Andrew’s, East Carolina University, Me thodist, and Pembroke, whore- main on Wesleyan’s schedule. In any case, the new restrictive measures are not designed to end a pro blem by ignoring it, but are de signed for the benefit of all students as well as those which cannot be accepted at this time. As Mr. Gar low stated, “The new precedent has been set be cause of the physical restric tions of both the college and of many wheelchair students.” Dean Moore is in agreement with Mr. Garlow’s recommen dation. He also believes that if this precedent is maintained that the Board of Trustees will become more aware of the acuteness of the problem and will endeavor to give support to the building of an elevator. The building funds for the elevator have already been par tially raised by the S.A.A.B., Students Against Architectural Barriers. About$5,000has been raised; about $1,000 more is needed to fulfill the S.A.A.B. portion. It is hoped that the college will raise its portion, $12,000 in time for the ele vator to be constructed this summer.
