Letters To Editor
(Continued from Page 2)
THE DECREE, get such a fan
tastic amount of intellectual
freedom . . ,'i, and, all in all,
I^m truly happy to say that
Wesleyan completely fullfills
any and all requirement for a
living, free environment of in
tellectual growth.
The most poignantly unique
things at Wesleyan, however,
is the opportunity it provides
for one to thoroughly understand
all the many many different
types of people in this world.
There are so many different
people at Wesleyan, all of whom
have so greatly contributed to
my growth and understanding of
this wonderful world, in gen
eral, that it is difficult to single
out any group that has done me
the most amount of good.
However, without wishing to
take away from any of the
other groups, I feel that one
must certainly be held respon
sible for my attempts at mat
urity and understanding, under
gone through my first semes
ter here at Wesleyan.
_ That group, though no inten
tion of their own, (for by de
finition it is impossible for
this group to have any clear-
cut intentions), are the emo
tionally disturbed students of
Wesleyan who can manage, quite
successfully, (bless their
hearts !i to take their trays
to the tables in the cafeteria,
but, for some, no doubt, se
vere emotional block, cannot
feel it within their realm of
capacities to take the tray back
to get it washed.
I have witnessed this many
“a time” since Pve been here
and at first I was greatly puzzl
ed by the whole proceedings.
Just who were these people, I
asked myself, who had the pri
vilege of behaving like slobs? I
now realize with true under
standing, sympathy, pity, and a
little hope how unfortunate these
poor individuals are. And reali
zing this, I realize also what a
wonderful school 1 attend, for
here I can truly prepare my
self for the not-ahvays-so-
very-pleasant realities of life.
Thank you for letting me ex
press my gratitude to Wesleyan.
Sincerely,
Mary Getlein, Freshman

Wesleyan Bishops Defeat
Hornets In Spirited Game
By JOHN HINNANT
JANUARY 13, 8:00 P.M. Tues
day night the Bishops met the
Hornets of Greensboro College
in what proved to be the great
est Wesleyan effort of the sea
son, From the tip off to the fi
nal minutes, the Bishops do
minated the playing floor in
spite of the loss of Jerome
Brown and Jim Dixon from
injuries that occurred in the
last home game.
Roger Taylor, high scorer for
the game with 28 points, set the
pace by collecting the game’s
first 2 points on an eight-
foot jump shot. Others support
ing Taylor with exceptional
playing in the first half were
Mike Lynch, Phil McPhail, and
several long jump shots by
“Jake” Barnes. At half time,
Wesleyan had built up a 43-31
lead over Greensboro.
During the second half, the
Hornets made several attempts
at a rally, but they fell short
as “Nick” Laurenson, Phil Me- '
Phail, and Roger Taylor led the
Bishops. With Jake Barnes sit
ting out with three fouls early
in the third quarter, his
replacement, Ted Midgett, de
monstrated one beautiful lay up
shot that seemed impossible.
The Bishops not only were able
to score, both from the floor
and foul line, but good defense
often forced Greensboro to take

added to the victory margin.
With 4:44 seconds to go Mike
Lynch sank a foul shot, giv
ing Wesleyan its largest lead
of the game, 69 to 51. Greens
boro quickly followed with 2
points and only seconds later,
Roger Taylor was fouled. He
successfully sank both shots,
regaining the 18 point lead.
The teams then exchanged one
free throw apiece, raising the
score to 72-54. The Hornets
then rallied for two shots and
a technical foul was called on
Wesleyan. Only one shot of the
three was successful, making
the score 72-59, with 2 1/2
minute*! remaining. Greensboro
then rallied for another 2
points narrowing the lead to 11
points. Nick Laurenson was
fouled and completed one shot
making the score 73-61. The
Hornets then collected 2 more
points, but Laurenson was foul
ed seconds later and complet
ed both shots raising the score
to 75-63 with 1:31 seconds re
maining. Greensboro then col
lected 2 points from the foul
line but moments later fouled
Roger Taylor and he sank both
foul shots. Rallying for 4 points.
Greensboro closed the lead to 8
points with 52 seconds left in the
game and making the score 77-
69, Roger Taylor then sank a
2 pointer to increase the Bis
hops lead to 10. Phil McPhail
was fouled seconds later and
the third Greensboro player re
tired from the game with five
fouls, this one a technical. Mc
Phail sank both shots bringing,
the score to 81-69 with seconds
left in the game. Greensboro
then made the last 2 points
and the buzzer sounded with the
scoreboard reading 81-71,
Wesleyan ahead by 10 points.
The Bishops demonstrated
that they are a Basketball
TEAM. If the students of this
college and nearby community
want to see what should be an
excellent varsity college bas
ketball game; they should come
Monday night, January 19 when
Wesleyan plays Lynchburg in
Everett Gymnasium.
