Pool Room Paneled By Circle K Chapter Work began Saturday, March 14, on the Pool Room in Wes- leyan’s Student Union by the Circle K Club. Plans are to panel the entire room as a pro ject for the service organiza tion. The SGA locked the doors on Friday in order that work could begin, closing the Pool Room to student use, reported ly, until the renovations are finished. The reported pur pose for the renovation is to improve the appearance of the room and to make it more pleasant for student use. The cost of the improvements are being supplied to Circle K, al though the manpower is fur nished by the Club. Student opinion on the need of paneling and the improve ment it will render ranges be tween enthusiasm and cynicism. Senate Considers 1970 SGA Budget John, Because of my absence, pre sident pro-tem Ken Carter pre sided over the February 16 Senate meeting. Carter call ed the meeting to order and opened the floor to committee | reports. Betty Lee, chairman of ' the School Spirit Committee, stated that Dr. Davis has yet to provide suitable lyrics to the proposed alma mater entries. John Kordulak reported from the Grievance Committee that Dean Wilde stated that if Mr. Sawyer and the telephone com pany could come to terms, the college would provide extra pay telephones for the dorms. As chairman of the Rules Commit tee and Senate parliamentarian, Bruce Wright was instructed to looked into the procedure of submitting Senate bills to the SGA president. When the floor was opened to new business, several sena tors expressed concern with the manner of electing class presi dents, It was suggested that prospective candidates should employ the DECREE as a means of informing the student body of their political intentions. As a further matter of new business, the idea ofdormitory open house on Sundays between 3 and 5 p,m. was brought to the Senate floor. The Senate wishes to hear the opinion of the dorm presidents before such an idea is pursued further. As a final order of* business, it was moved, secon ded, and passed that the Senate establish a committee for the investigation of the student court system. Bruce Wright was made chairman of the commit tee with John Kordulak as co- chairman and Allen Winter, Carolyn Dabney, and Ned Hill as committee members. Respectfully, Bill Brantley, President of the Senate John, The March 9 Senate meeting was opened with a statement from Ned Hill, chairman of the Food Service Committee. Hill reported that as of March 9 there had been no meeting of the newly instituted Board of Directors, However, he did say that a meeting was scheduled for March 10. John Kordulak, chairman of the Grievance Committee, closed committee reports by informing the Se nate that he was unable to ob tain from Mr. Sawyer an offi cial explanation regarding the delay in the installation of ad ditional telephones. When the floor was opened to old business, Ken Carter reported that the Inter-Club Council had assumed the re sponsibility of entering an N.C. Wesleyan float in the forth coming Rocky Mount parade. The parade is scheduled for (Continued on Page 4) For SGA Presidency By MARSHA OLD Bob Leyda became Wesley- an’s 1970-71 S.G.A. President defeating Don Papke in a tight race Friday, March 13. With a turnout of approxitnately 56% of the voters, the entire slate of S.G.A. officers were elected; they include: Ed Gunter, Vice President; Maria Gargano, Se cretary; Tom Snyder, Trea surer; Galen Heaps, Attorney General; and John Hornaday, Defense Counselor. With the exception of Betty Lee’s write-in campaign for secretary and Dan Turner’s campaign for treasurer; only the office of president and vice president were opposed. The three candidates for vice pre sident were Allen Winter, Da vid Walker, and Ed Gunter, Don Papke based his plat form on an improved social sch edule for Wesleyan student’s, Don urged the formation of a fund from the student compre hensive fee to support more and better social activities. Bob Leyda focused his platform against a reported trend of con servation in dorm regulations and other student concerns. Each candidate expressed con cern that the S.G.A, build on the gains made this year. The vice presidential speech es were primarily directed to ward improvements to be made in the Senate, Though each can didate has specific plans, the majority opinion was that the Senate should be made larger in order to make it more re presentative. Representation for clubs and groups, increase class representation and other ideas were suggested in turn by each candidate, Tom Snyder promised that he would serve faithfully if elected and that he would regard the election as an honor. John Hornaday camp aigning for the office of defense counselor noted his past exper ience on the Supreme Court as his qualifications for office. Galen Heaps, candidate for at torney general, argued against strict interpretation of Bis hops’ Law. Though not speci fic, Heaps stated that after dis pensing with strict interpreta- ition there were more things “that we could get into.” Spe culation in the audience ran high on this point. Convocations Date Changed The final convocations pro gram will be held on Friday, April 10 instead of Thursday April 9, All classes that meet on Friday at 10:50 A.M, (time block #3) will be held at 10:50 on April 9, All students are recommen ded to attend the Honors Con vocation rescheduled from April 9 to April 2, Leggett Announces Talent Auditions According to Circle K pre sident Thomas Leggett, audi tions for the annual talent show will be held in room 187 from 7 to 10 PM, on March 17, People wishing to audition are requested to notify Thomas Leggett first. Campus Open House Planned For Mar. 21 Under the auspices of the Inter-club Council, this week end Wesleyan will host return ing native sons of Rocky Mount in accordance with the All- American City pageant. The purpose of the open-house is three-fold: (1. Celebrate the All-American City award; (2, Increase effective public re lations; and (3, Explore the pos sibilities of aiding the Capital Funds Campaign, Prior to this Saturday, publicity for the event will have included coverage in the local press, radios, and thr ough churches. The publicity committee was chaired by Ju lie Robinson, The first event of which Wes leyan will have a part will be the parade in downtown Rocky Mount which will start at 9:30 A.M. In this, Wesleyan will have a float of blue and gold preceded by selected cheer leaders, In it will be several students representing the var ious areas of Wesleyan life. Mary Ann Steiffen, Miss Wes leyan, will be joined by Roger Taylor (athletics), Judy John son (theater-Thurber Carnival) and Linda Daniels (chemistry academics). All of these will be engaged in some form of activity indicative of their areas.
