Pool Room Paneled
By Circle K Chapter
Work began Saturday, March
14, on the Pool Room in Wes-
leyan’s Student Union by the
Circle K Club. Plans are to
panel the entire room as a pro
ject for the service organiza
tion.
The SGA locked the doors
on Friday in order that work
could begin, closing the Pool
Room to student use, reported
ly, until the renovations are
finished. The reported pur
pose for the renovation is to
improve the appearance of
the room and to make it more
pleasant for student use. The
cost of the improvements are
being supplied to Circle K, al
though the manpower is fur
nished by the Club.
Student opinion on the need
of paneling and the improve
ment it will render ranges be
tween enthusiasm and cynicism.
Senate Considers
1970 SGA Budget
John,
Because of my absence, pre
sident pro-tem Ken Carter pre
sided over the February 16
Senate meeting. Carter call
ed the meeting to order and
opened the floor to committee |
reports. Betty Lee, chairman of '
the School Spirit Committee,
stated that Dr. Davis has yet to
provide suitable lyrics to the
proposed alma mater entries.
John Kordulak reported from
the Grievance Committee that
Dean Wilde stated that if Mr.
Sawyer and the telephone com
pany could come to terms, the
college would provide extra pay
telephones for the dorms. As
chairman of the Rules Commit
tee and Senate parliamentarian,
Bruce Wright was instructed to
looked into the procedure of
submitting Senate bills to the
SGA president.
When the floor was opened
to new business, several sena
tors expressed concern with the
manner of electing class presi
dents, It was suggested that
prospective candidates should
employ the DECREE as a means
of informing the student body of
their political intentions. As a
further matter of new business,
the idea ofdormitory open house
on Sundays between 3 and 5 p,m.
was brought to the Senate floor.
The Senate wishes to hear the
opinion of the dorm presidents
before such an idea is pursued
further. As a final order of*
business, it was moved, secon
ded, and passed that the Senate
establish a committee for the
investigation of the student
court system. Bruce Wright was
made chairman of the commit
tee with John Kordulak as co-
chairman and Allen Winter,
Carolyn Dabney, and Ned Hill
as committee members.
Respectfully,
Bill Brantley,
President of the Senate
John,
The March 9 Senate meeting
was opened with a statement
from Ned Hill, chairman of
the Food Service Committee.
Hill reported that as of March
9 there had been no meeting of
the newly instituted Board of
Directors, However, he did say
that a meeting was scheduled
for March 10. John Kordulak,
chairman of the Grievance
Committee, closed committee
reports by informing the Se
nate that he was unable to ob
tain from Mr. Sawyer an offi
cial explanation regarding the
delay in the installation of ad
ditional telephones.
When the floor was opened
to old business, Ken Carter
reported that the Inter-Club
Council had assumed the re
sponsibility of entering an N.C.
Wesleyan float in the forth
coming Rocky Mount parade.
The parade is scheduled for

For SGA Presidency
By MARSHA OLD
Bob Leyda became Wesley-
an’s 1970-71 S.G.A. President
defeating Don Papke in a tight
race Friday, March 13. With a
turnout of approxitnately 56% of
the voters, the entire slate of
S.G.A. officers were elected;
they include: Ed Gunter, Vice
President; Maria Gargano, Se
cretary; Tom Snyder, Trea
surer; Galen Heaps, Attorney
General; and John Hornaday,
Defense Counselor.
With the exception of Betty
Lee’s write-in campaign for
secretary and Dan Turner’s
campaign for treasurer; only
the office of president and vice
president were opposed. The
three candidates for vice pre
sident were Allen Winter, Da
vid Walker, and Ed Gunter,
Don Papke based his plat
form on an improved social sch
edule for Wesleyan student’s,
Don urged the formation of a
fund from the student compre
hensive fee to support more and
better social activities. Bob
Leyda focused his platform
against a reported trend of con
servation in dorm regulations
and other student concerns.
Each candidate expressed con
cern that the S.G.A, build on
the gains made this year.
The vice presidential speech
es were primarily directed to
ward improvements to be made
in the Senate, Though each can
didate has specific plans, the
majority opinion was that the
Senate should be made larger
in order to make it more re
presentative. Representation
for clubs and groups, increase
class representation and other
ideas were suggested in turn by
each candidate, Tom Snyder
promised that he would serve
faithfully if elected and that
he would regard the election as
an honor. John Hornaday camp
aigning for the office of defense
counselor noted his past exper
ience on the Supreme Court as
his qualifications for office.
Galen Heaps, candidate for at
torney general, argued against
strict interpretation of Bis
hops’ Law. Though not speci
fic, Heaps stated that after dis
pensing with strict interpreta-
ition there were more things
“that we could get into.” Spe
culation in the audience ran
high on this point.
