By ALLEN WINTER How well do you know your Student Court System? The Supreme Court is com posed of seven justices, but did you know that only one of those seven has ever served on Supreme Court prior to this year? The nomination of jus tices is handled by the Senate each year and the implication is that the justice must be a politician to retain his office. A sub-committee of last year’s senate proposed that applicants. for justices: 1. must file an application for nomination. 2. Applications be reviewed by the S. G. A. President and must meet with individual, two-thirds majority Senate approval. 3. Membership on the Supreme Court shall terminate upon re signation or failure to main tain prime office requirements. 4. Term of office shall not exceed three years. The Constitution of the S. G. A. mentions that the Su preme Court has jurisdiction over eleven types of crime yet no mention is made by the con stitution of the sentencing for these crimes. Should sentenc ing be limited and defined for president? Last year’s Senate proposed: Sentencing 1. ex pulsion 2. suspension 3. sus pended suspension 4. social SMENC To Present Faculty Frolics Soon The administration of North Carolina Wesleyan College is now evaluating its faculty to in sure that a relative level of efficiency is maintained. The administration is reviewing op inions of staff members, other faculty members, students, and college records and will use this information as a basis for measuring each professor’s value. Items such as an instruc tor’s availability to his stu dents, his knowledge of current events within his field, the num ber of students following up his courses with majors or graduate work, are used in determining his value as a pro fessor. The administration is attempting to determine whe ther or not a faculty member is fulfilling his duties as an instructor and that he works in co-operation and not in conflict with his students and fellow in structors. The evaluation finally is based upon student evaluation of the professors. This is giv ing the student body a voice in determining the quality of the professor’s instruction. More information on the ev aluation of the faculty will be available at a later date. On Friday, 8:15 p.m. Octo ber 9, 1970, Student Music Ed ucators of North Carolina will present Wesleyan Faculty Fro lics in Everett Gymnasium. Fa culty Frolics was first present ed last year in order to raise money for a music scholarship. This year’s performance will feature songs, dances, skits, and impersonations. A favorite from last year was Dr. Thomas Collins’ im personation of Jack Benny, Al_ October Dates Set For Graduate Record Exams so, coaches Scalf and Chancey, Mr, Mizelle and Dr. Davis in trigued the audience with their quartet. The year’s program will fea ture President Collins, Assis tant Alexander, Dean Moore, Dean Cordts, Mr. Mizelle, Dr. Davis, and Mrs. Harrison, A complete cast is not available at this time. The Faculty Frolics program has in the past provided good entertainment for a good cause. Tickets may be bought from any SMENC member or if re servations are desired see the Dean of Students. A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door. The cost per tickets is $1.00. probation 5. fines 6. repri mand. Last year this writer defend ed in Supreme Court two girls that were given notice just eight hours prior to the meeting of the Court they were to appear stating the charges and the fact that they must appear be fore the court. Should a de finite night for Supreme Court .meetings be set? Should atime limit be set on how soon an accused person must appear be fore the court? The propos al of last year’s senate is; A definite night shall be set aside as a permanent meeting time for the Supreme Court. 1. Attendance at meetings of the court shall be compulsory except in extreme cases. 2. Absences must be cleared with the chief justice. 3. Unex cused absences are subject to impeachment by the Senate. Time limit; 1. All trials must be held no less than five days following, and no more than ten days following, the filing of accusation. A proposal was also made concerning written accusations; 1. All accusations must be filed within two days after the incident involved. 2. All ac cusations must be filed in writ ten form by the Attorney Ge neral to the Chief Justice. 3. The accused must be notified within two days after charges have been brought against hirn. These proposals are sign ificant to point out the weak nesses of our court system. The strength of the Wesleyan Supreme Court history is that many distinguished justices have acted in a fair manner.
