He also said he was only “kidding” and if I was that “thin-skinned” I did not belong on the team. (I used his own words,) I accepted his apology with some reserve. After much consideration, I now realize that I erred in not pursuing the matter. Our bas ketball team is sick. Three members have quit. Petty jea- laisies and hatreds have flair- ed, even in myself. These are haru words, but the truth is often hard. I believe that a dark cloud of Bishop Of The Week Mr. Earl Harper, Techni cal Coach of the Bishops, was named “Bishop of the Week” in last week’s poll by the DE CREE. Mr. Harper, one who is known throughout the school for his contribution of time and sup port, might be labeled the “Bishop” for whom our teams are-named. He is the guard ian who supplied the gum and keeps the ankle wraps in order. “Harp,” as he is commonly called, measures 5’11” and weighs 143 pounds. He doesn’t lead in the rebounding depart ment or have the best field goal percentage, but he has leadership among the players. He is looked upon by all with respect. Whenever a team is down, whether it be' because of defeat or just the “blahs,” Mr. Harper is there to bring a little laughter and joy, “Harp” resides with hiswife in Rocky Mount, The Bas ketball team along with many many others would like to PIZZA INN CARRY OUT EAT IN 44^3027 MON. - FRI. 4 - 12 SAT. 12 - 12-SUN. 4 - 10 Order by Phone Fot Faster Service Allow Approximately 20 Minutes DISCOUNT Ml 'IH - R E X A U L ilj ; DRUGS I ' ; '130 SOUTH MAIN ST. ! FEALTH AND BEAUTY AIDS 10% TO 40% DISCOUNT thank you, Mr. Harper, for your many contributions to Wesleyan and congratulate you on being “Bishop of the Week.” MR. HARPER despair is spreading over our team. At the Lynchburg game Chancey ordered the players to slow the tempo of the game with six minutes on the clock and Wesleyan behind by nine teen points. Any chance of victory was lost at this time by the use of this action. Several days later this po licy was questioned by a team member in a bull session. Chan cy replied that he would ra ther lose by nineteen points than forty. This means but one thing to me. The person leading our team refused to take our only chance at win ning for fear of losing worse than we did. He had accept ed as fact we could not de feat Lynchburg. What effect can this defeatiest attitude have on the players? (Three have quit.) Does Chancey feel that the team will be sham ed or himself by such a defeat? I cannot recall a single in stance of Chancey; praising the team after a game; win, lose, or draw. I have witnessed fa voritism, and discrimination displayed by Chancey. Because of this letter I will probably lose by present posi tion in the athletic department and maybe my job for next year. I am willing to suffer whatever comes of this. I cannot watch our team die. I only hope I have spurred the student body, faculty, and ad ministration into making an in quest into the entire state of affairs.
