PAGE 4 THE DECREE TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21. 1971 NCWC, Number One ’71 Soccer Schedule The North Carolina Wesley an College golf team, under the guidance of Coach DonScalf made history last May by cap turing the Dixie Intercolle giate Athletic Conference Championship for the second straight year. The Bishop linksters took the conference title in cham pionship style as they led their nearest competitor, St. An drews, by 25 strokes, Wesleyan also made history by setting a new tournament record with a team score of 774, two strokes better than the previous record. It is al so of interest to note that it was the Bishops in 1970 that set the former DIAC record of 776 for a team score. TTie Bishops entered into the championship round May 4 with a 18-stroke lead over St. An drews, their nearest competi tor, who ended the match with a team score of 809. A 74 by Dick Shannonhouse in the second round enabled him towin the medalist trophy, and enab led Wesleyan to increase their lead. The Lynchburg Hornets came in third in the tournament with a 818, and then the scores were no longer close. Virginia Wesleyan had a 856 for fourth place. The University of North Carolina at Greensboro was fifth with an 864, Methodist was sixth with a 873, 99 strokes behind the Bishops, and Greens boro College Trailed the tour nament with a 903. Other honors earned by the Bishops last May were meda list winners. Dick Shannon house, North Carolina Wesley an, finished first with a 149. “Bootle” Pilcher, North Car olina Wesleyan, second with a 151, Ron Bremer, Methodist College, finished third with a 154 and Joe Restein, North Ca rolina Wesleyan, tied with Mac Jones St, Andrews Presbyter ian College, for fourth place with a 155, Educational Testing Dates Announced PRINCETON, N. J.—Educa tional Testing Service announ ced today that undergraduates and others preparing to go to graduate school may take the Graduate Record Examinations on any of six different test dates during the current aca demic year. The first testing date for the GRE is October 23, 1971, Sco res from this administration will be reported to the grad uate schools around December 1, Students planning to regis ter for the October test date are advised that applications received by ETS after October 5 will incur a $3.50 late regis tration fee. After October 8, there is no guarantee that appli cations for the October test date can be processed. The other five test dates are December 11, 1971, January 15, February 26, April 22, and June 17, 1972. Equivalent late fee and registration deadlines ap ply to these dates. Choice of test dates should be determin ed by the requirements of gra duate schools or fellowships to which one is applying. Scor es are usually reported to gra duate schools five weeks after a test date. The Graduate Record Exa minations include an Aptitude Test of general scholastic abi lity and Advanced Tests mea suring achievement in 19 ma jor fields of study. Full de tails and registration forms for the GRE are contained in the 1971-72 GRE Information Bul letin. The Bulletin also con tains forms and instructions for requesting transcript service on GRE scores already on file with ETS. Wesleyan has hardly ever been known as a winner in the field of athletics. Well now it’s time to look up and back the Bishops as they start a new year as No. 1. Weyerhaeuser Makes Grant NEW BUREAU—N, C. Wes leyan will share in the $12,500 gift by the Weyerhaeuser Com pany Foundation to the 26- member North Caro'ina Foun dation of Church-Related Col leges. The Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation has announced grants totaling $145,000 to 27 state and regional associations of the Independent College Funds of America. This is the tenth consecutive year that Weyerhaeuser has supported the private colleges of the state associations. The Weyerhaesuer Founda tion annuallydisburses approxi mately $1.5 million to various charitable organizations. The Foundation is supported by Weyerhaeuser Company, an in ternational forest products firm with headquarters in Tacoma, Washington. Locations with concentrations of the company’s employees receive philanthro pic priority. In addition to Wesleyan, the other members of the N. C. Wesleyan College, has composed music for Psalm 57, and the work has been pub lished by Gould-Stuart Music Co. Dr, Davis has set about 25 of the Psalms to music, but this 57th Psalm is the first to be pub lished. It is suitable for church choirs, high school, college and other serious choral groups, and is to be sung unaccompan ied. According to Dr. Davis, the Psalms have a lyrical quality that makes them well suited to set to music, and he plans to issue a series of musical Psalms. Any choral group who wishes further information about the published music may contact the composer at N, C, Wesleyan College. Dr. Davis joined the Wesley an faculty in Sept. 1967, and his teaching specialties are composition and theory, music history, and voice. He directs the 16-voice Chamber Singers at Wesleyan, and has composed a number of works, including operas and a short cantata.
