WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1972 THE DECREE PAGE 3 1). Politics is a dirty business, a, yes, b, no, c, maybe: sometimes, d, none of the above e, all ofthe above can go cram it. This was the first question on a psychological attitude test that I took when I was four teen years old. I had been taught not to make sweeping generalizations, so -I answer ed c. I was wrong — the “cor rect" answer was a, I re member thinking that I was facing TRUTH — not that poli tics really is a dirty business, but that the test was wrong and I KNEW I was right! I must have been a pompous little kid. It actually has taken six years of growth to begin to perceive the dimensions of the above statement. I’ve learned that politics is not the only thing that’s dirty —anything that man touches is capable of becoming soiled — because man is ob noxiously selfish. If I stop at this point of evaluation, I will become like most students at Wesleyan — cynical. The nou veau college image to portray is one of coolly, apathetic “wis dom beyond years” — but with no experience to back it up (“Wow man, I can dig it, but everything is hopelessly ab surd”), There is one more step. True wisdom sees how bad things are and the necessity of living one’s life doing something about it. My third “revelation of truth” that I will share with you is that politics is not only a national T. V. campaign for the presidency. It is a way of life. You’ll find it in any in stitution in the world including dear little Wesleyan. If you don’t believe me, then think about the “speeches” given at the Founder’s Day convoca tion. That should be obvious enough to convince any self - respecting student (that’s about the only kind of respect one has left after one of those pro grams). THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: In politics, when one is given a position by the good grace of the person in power, the ap pointee’s actions are always motivated by one thing — stay ing in the good grace of the ap- pointer. Both administrations, Wes- leyan’s and Nixon’s, are to blame for the current apathy. One can’t help being complete ly discouraged after working conscientiously through the supposedly open channels, one is promptly rebuffed by an ad ministrative veto. But, as a “great American hero” once said; “Dont give up the ship!” Talk about a political statement. That was pretty obvious wasn’t it? In case you’re interested, I just happen to be related to that great hero. But please don’t stop reading just because this writer sees himself as John Paul Jones. Just as it is the American public's responsibility, come election day, to keep politicians on their toes and Nixon on the right track (no pun Intended), so it is our responsibility as students and financial support ers to keep Wesleyan on Its toes. Remember their lovely little saying, “Freedom With Responsibility”? Well, we want a little freedom to show how responsible we are. In order to be responsible and keep Wesleyan responsible, we must be sure that Wesleyan can answer for every action. There fore . . . “Wesleyan, we raise our voice to thee . . and SCREAM: l)Where did the sum mer school actlvitly fee go? 2) Why do the supposedly In tellectual elite of this world succumb to the tactics of mali cious gossip to achieve their purposes? 3) Why can’t stu dents, who pay extra money for an overload of hours, get their money back after they drop the additional hours over fifteen? 4) Why are there different le vels of punishment for the same offense (Why does the means of punishment depend on whe ther you have longhair, whether you’re male or female, black or white, student or teacher, rich or poor, sycophantic or honest)? 5) Why are black student’s applications to this college considered separately from the white’s and why are black students always assigned black room mates? 6) If Wes leyan, as an American college, supposedly reflects the Amer ican political system of demo cracy, then how on earth can the Dean of Students office abo lish the right of students of trial by peers? Any red - blooded All-American gets de- wey-eyed when the BIU of Rights is read — and violently defen sive when any of those precious rights are threatened. When the student’s rights as American citizens and Wesleyan students are cancelled or denied, what is their reaction going to be? Anyone In power who makes il logical or unconstitutional deci sions better be prepared for some violent reactions. Any academically respecta ble college would say that their purpose is to better the A- merican society by teaching the young self-respect, high i- deals, and a more profound manner of thinking Intelligent ly, logically, and openly. Pm sure Wesleyan would agree that this too is Its purpose. By not acknowledging that Wesleyan students can think logically, act responsibly, or have intelligent opinions, isn’t Wesleyan say ing that it has made no con tribution to society, and has foiled in its attempt to ele vate the students; therefore, Wesleyan has no purpose, and its continued existence is awas- te of Rocky Mount’s and stu dent’s money, and EVERY ONE’S “life’s blood”. “To you with failing hands we throw the torch”. It is - your turn, students. We all know it Is easier not to make a fuss and continue trying to get by as usual by just breaking the rules. But, I don’t think that is right and I don’t think that you do either. Note: I discovered what Truth and Right are — living one’s life trying to reach one’s conception of Truth and Right. EDITORIAL (Continued from Page 2) and how many of them are spe cial students Mr. Garlow \e- plied: “There is always the possi bility that someone may not know the facts, but each year within ten days after registra tion any student organization on campus can request through proper channels, specifically through the Dean of Students of fice, for any set of figures. If the student government official would have requested through Mr. Maxwell or even directly through me these figures could have been made available with in ten days after registration.” Mr. Garlow further stated: “The full time equivalency of part time students is com piled at the same time as all other enrollment statistics (prior to October first).” It seems that the elections for day student senators has not been postponed because of re cord or the lack of thenj, but because of some other, unknown reason. Whatever that reason is it is a sad state of affairs when a group of students is not represented on a student se nate for almost an entire semester. It makes no differ ence whether or not, now that applications are available, day students apply for the senate seats to make this editorial a valid one. They should have been given a choice before now. Dorm residents . , , what if it were your representation? Mr. Harrison and Mr. Kersh- ner, as Election Chairmen, it seems, blew It. This column would like to know the real reason that day student senate elections are just being held. And for that matter it would be nice to find out why some people think this Year’s fresh man class needs longer to get to know each other than that of any other freshman class in this college’s history. You are right. The purpose of this series is to make you aware of some of the dis coveries in science that don’t receive national attention. I also hope to speak with the pro fessors of the sciences here at Wesleyan to get their views on many issues. So stick around and I just might say something that will interest you. I was reading Science Digest the other day and came across an article I would like to share with you concerning marijuana. I am compelled to say at this point that I don’t use nor ad vocate the use of marijuana. There have been some dis coveries concerning marijuana that merit some comment. It has been found that the pure form of marijuana (delta-9- titrahydrocannab inol - THC) has some medical value. Tests show its effectiveness in low ering high blood pressure, trea tment of migraine headaches, epilepsy, and lowering body temperature (suspended anima tion). The U. S. Army has studied suspended animation in dogs which has been induced by a single injection of pure THC, These dogs have been placed in suspended animation for as long as eight days. The dogs re covered and were normal in all respects. The Army has also found that THC could possi bly be a battlefield aid for cas- ulaties, enabling these men to be put into suspended animation until they could receive proper medical attention. THC has also been found to be twenty times more potent than repespine (the current drug be ing used) in lowering high blood pressure. The drug’s capability for lowering body temperature has important applications in supressing high fevers on body metabolism. Another aspect that has come out of these studies is that marijuana purchased on the str eets contains small amounts of THC; therefore some scien tists believe that the “high” usually associatedwithsmoking marijuana is in the imparities or is a psycholc^cal factor. Next time . . . who knows; it depends on what I feel like writing about. THE GANT ATTITUDE To lead is to recreate plaid. Accomplished here in the crossing of colors on lustrous broadcloth.
