PAGE 2 THE DECREE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1973 Stop Bitching The Editorial expressing concern over the lateness of day student senate elections and. the lateness of freshman class officers, (November 5, 1972) was met with both admiration and damnation. At that time, day students were the main concern since it is the opinion of the editors that a student government is not what it aims to be without true representation. Now, we believe, the true horror really comes to the surface. Something happened last semester that hurt the inner fiber of the college more than the late ness of day student elections. The Freshman elec tions was more important. It is the Decree’s opin ion that one of the main reasons that no Freshmen have become candidates is because they haven’t been able to accomplish anything this year. Why should they waste their time again? Once more with less than a semester to go they were given the right to have officers. They have, evidently decided that they will ' not now bother to attempt to help themselves. What many thought to be an overdone attack perhaps now will have more meanfng as next years Sophomores decide that there is no reason to have a voice in campus life. They apparently have decided that the attempt would be in vain. They think their voice would be as quiet as a single hand clapping. Perhaps this hokis true for other elected offices. One person desires to be President of the SGA, one desires the office of Treasurer, Secretary and Defense Attorney. Nobody wants to be Attorney Gen eral, People do not even get excited about Social Com mission Events anymore. Given the opportunity to have a band for the Friday night, only a handful of students bought advance tickets which was to pay for the group. Yet a large majority voted for a “Total Weekend" and were willing to pay. What happened to the elections, to Spring Fling, and anything else that goes on at Wesleyan for that matter? The lecture on “Student Apathy” is getting to be oW hat around here and it’s nobody’s fault but your own, you the stu dent body. The time has come and the challenge is before you, either help yourselves by helping your SGA and school or stop the endless bitching about how no thing is ever done or going on around here. CARE IS HELPING - WILL YOU? Tragedy and horror are reflected in the face of this Injured young victim of the earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua, as he clutches his precious armload of relief supplies — a jar of food, a candle and a blanket. CARE was on the scene immedi ately with food, medical and other emergency aid. To provide relief, and reconstruction help for the survivors, please send your funds to: CARE Nicaragua Earthquake Fund, 615 For- sjfth Building, Atlanta, Georgia 30303. (Your contribution is tax deductable.) Dear Qiief . . . Dear Chief: In the January 10, 1973 Issue of The Decree you had a letter which expressed, concern on three items, I feel constrained to answer item number two con cerning the building of a Skeet Range on the North Carolina Wesleyan campus. It would be an injustice on my part if I did not enlighten the Wesleyan community as to the formation of this endeavor. The most expensive item on a Skeet Field are the traps to pro ject the missiles. These, traps were made available to us by my father, at no cost to the col lege, Trap houses were con structed primarily from mater ials contributed by various in dividuals, or, in some instances from materials reclaimed from some waste piles. The work to install the trap® and erect the houses was done by Mr. Curtis Batchelor, Mr, Don ScaU, and myself, primarily during hours that we were not associated with the college from a work commitment stand - point. To this point then, the construction of the Skeet Field has not required any type of financial outlay on the part of the college! This explanation is not for self aggrandizement. It is sim ply to clarify the fact that the^ college is very much aware of I Its responsibility concerning the use of funds. I wish we could have all of the appara tus necessary to provide a com plete, well rounded physical education program. However, fully aware that money is at a. premium, we shall continue to expand our program in the dir ection of recreational type ac tivities. Sincerely yours, Raymond E. Bauer Director, Physical Education Dear Chief: We feel that a word of app reciation Is due to those stu dents, faculty, and administra tors who continued to support the home appearances of the N. C. Wesleyan basketball team, despite what we recognize as a disappointing season. The coaching staff is in the ■ process of working on our pro gram for next season, and hope that it will meet our expec tations. We want to build a winning basketball program at Wesleyan, and with this in mind, we are working primarily to ward that end. We anticipate that you will want to be a part of this program.
