NCWC Bows To ACC
Head Coach A1 Horne shows his versatility as a player.
Booters In Review
The Bishops traveled north
to battle the Marline Virginia
Wesleyan where our booters
were hoping to continue their
winning streak, but question
able referring spoiled their
hopes. The Marlins were pro
bably the most physical team
the Bishops’ faced this season.
Virginia Wesleyan took con
trol of the game with an
excellent passing attack. The
Bishops settled down and
started to play their own
excellent style of soccer. The
passing from the wins to the
insides in the first half was the
best it has been all season. The
Bishops offense kept up the
pressure and Virginia Wesley
an made their first mistake.
They were called for a handball
inside their penalty area. Rick
Davis scored Wesleyan first
goal. The Bishops continued to
the drive up the middle and
scored again. Carter Tinsley, a
fine freshman halfback, scored
from five yards away. This
made the score N. C. Wesleyan
two Virginia Wesleyan zero.
The Bishops once again were
content to set on a two goal lead
and let Virginia Wesleyan come
back. They took advantage of a
handball in the penalty area to
score their first goal. The
Marlins and Bishops each con
trolled the ball for the remain
der of the first half. With
fifteen seconds left on the clock
in the half, Skep Brown scored
on a corner kick to tie the score
up.
The second half started and
Virginia Wesleyan with a
strong wind with them manag
ed to control the tempo of the
second half. Besides the wind
factor in the second half, the
Marlins also had two other
players who were dressed in
referee uniforms playing for
them. The Bishops still battled
hard. Tommy Henderson play
ed one of his finest games at
goalie. He saved or knocked

away many attempts by the
Marlins. The Bishops almost
scored but the Virginia Wesle
yan goalie grabbed Robert
Rivers around the neck and
shoulders preventing him from
scoring. The referees defended
this saying the goalie was
protecting himself.
The defense played excellent
and did not allow the Marlins to
score in the second half. The
final score was Virginia Wes
leyan two and North Carolina
Wesleyan two.
ACC BULLDOGS
What started out to be a
beautiful day turned into a
nightmare. The Bishops play
ing in front of a parents
weekend crowd lost to Atlantic
Christian College one to
nothing. The Bishops started
the game off with a fine
ofensive attack. Constantly
controlling the ball in their half
on the field. The Bishops
seemed to have numerous
scoring attempts in the first
half but could not put the ball in
the net. The Bishops shot
fourteen times in the first h^ilf,
while the Bulldogs could only
muster two shots against Wes
leyan. The first half ended with
neither team scoring.
The Bulldogs started off the
second half very quickly. They
attacked Wesleyan goal with
much more finesse than in the
first half. Wesleyan’s play
during the second half was very
sporadic. The Bulldogs finally
scored a goal on a penalty kick.
THANKS FOR
A FINE SEASON
The members of the Soccer
team are very grateful to Ben
Gregory, Jeff Hoagland and
Stan Grey. These three indivi
duals helped the soccer team
throughout the season. Three
are seniors and will be missed
by next years soccers team.
They did an outstanding job.

“Everybody gfive 100% all of
the time and sometimes more
than 100%” were the words of
Head Coach A1 Horne in praise
of his 1973 team. The Bishops
are having their best season
since 1965, but their record is
no indication of their play. This
is one of the best teams here in
the last four years and there
are many reasons for it. Mr.
Horne cites one of these
reasons as “not just the ability
of the players, but the attitude
of all 27 members and the
willingness of 16 of those to sit
on the bench and support the
team. The bench moral pushes
the starters to be better.” and
this is certainly true.
Coach Horne, in a recent
interview with the DECREE,
gave a player analysis for the
’73 season.
CHARLIE READ - RICK
DAVIS—both of these men
have scored as many goals this
season as in their career. They
are probably the fastest insides
in the conference.
CHUCK NELSON—Moved
to various positions on the front
line Churck has finally found a
home at center field and is
playing steady soccer.
CARLYLE TAYLOR—Out
standing at halfback since
moving up from his fullback
position where he played last
year.
CARTER TINSLEY-Carter
has added a great deal to the
team offensively and defen
sively. He shows a great
promise for a fine future.
ROBERT RIVERS — After
not participating in Soccer for
two years Robert has come
back to the team and turned in
several fine performances at
Right Wing. He has an in depth
knowledge of the game and an
unusual kicking ability which
compensates for his lack of
speed.
PETE HENDERSON &
MAC BUHRMAN—After five
games these men gained the
experienced necessary to aid
Elliot Harrell, returning letter-
man and fullback, in solidifying
our defense.
TOM HENDERSON — Re
turning this season after a
broken arm early last year Tom
is coming back into his old form
and is directing the defense
very ablely. His powerful arm
and long punts have proven to
be an effective offensive
weapon in several of our
games.
J. B. BIGGS & DAVE ROSS
—Both of these men have
turned in fine play and shown
good potential for future lines
men.
JOE CARDWELL—Joe has
done well in a supporting role
at halfback.
KIRT HAGUE—I am very
pleased with the promise
shown by freshman Kirt
Hague. He has quick move
ments, good positional know
ledge, and displays a fearless
attitude. I anticipate that he
