Murder in the Cathedral, is now being presented by the Wesleyan College Theatre Department. The play is directed and designed by Bruce VanBlar- com, choreography by Katie McFarland and Patti Thomp son, stage manager and assis tant stage manager: Tim Hill and Betsy Stabler, and techni cal director Doug Elder. The play is based on the death of Thomas a Becket, the Archibishop of Canterbury. This particular production is being presented to perhaps, let one’s mind question whether the word “murder” should be used at all in describing the circumstances concerning the downfall and demise of the Archbishop. To achieve the necessary atmosphere, Mr. VanBlarcom is placing the play in a con- structivistic setting and is directing the actors in the style of biomechanical acting. This style of acting leans heavily towards action as opposed to speech; and from watching the extensive rehearsals that have been taking place this is a show that does not “drag.” One can be assured that this production is a visual, not verbal commu nication to the audience. The character of Thomas a Becket is played by Gray Basnight, a junior theatre major from Richmond, Va. The other members of the cast include Cathy Chrismon, Lynda Land, Liz Martin, and Patti Thompson as the chorus. Gail Shearer, Bettie Garrick, and Mary Glenn Swanson as the priests. Michael Sledge, Char lie Rogers, Bruce VanBlarcom, and Doug Elder as the tempters. Robert Rivers, Mi chael Sledge, and Doug Elder as the knights. The messenger is played by Betsy Stabler. The play will begin at 8:30 p.m. and is being presented in the Coltrane Theatre. Tickets may be purchased at the door. For reservations call 442-7121 or see any member of the theater department. W.
