MONDAY, APRIL 25,1977 THE DECREE PAGE 3 Dear Wesleya Letter To The Editors Dear Wesleya, I was not a drinking person before I came to college, but because of peer pressiu’e I have changed. I really like this girl here on campus, but she doesn’t really know it yet from me. The other night I had one too many beers, and went looking for her. Instead of finding her, I made a fool out of myself by passing out. She has found out about everything I did that night. I still like her, and want to take her out. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about asking her. Magid Dear Tree, My first advice to you would be to calm down on your drinking. It can only complicate things, as you are undoubtedly aware of, by now. Your interest in this girl is already apparent to her, it would seem, but in a decidely contorted fashion. What you must do is gather your courage, apologize to her for your behavior, and deter mine to win her respect. In other words, clean up your act. Most girls appreciate a fellow who seems to know who he is and where he is going. Work on this, and when you feel that you are on a more stable footing with her, then ask her for a date. Some of the best relation ships start out more disastrous ly than yours has. Dear Wesleya, I am a professor here at Wesleyan, and an very attract ed, almost more than I can say, to a co-ed in one of my classes. She knows that we are friends, but I would hope for so much more in this relationship. What can I possibly do to change our situation? P. S. Fm willing to take the obvious risks. Rooked Knight Dear Rooked, Your choice of moves is limited and certainly entails risks. Regardless of your marital status, of which you give no indication, romantic attachments between profes sors and their students is decidedly taboo on Wesleyan’s campus. It is unfortunate, in your case, that love or infatuation cannot always coin cide with career ethics. Your only solution lies in determin ing how serious you would like the relationship to become. If you believe that this is more than a fleeting attraction, Ninth North Carolina Wesleyan’s baseball team is proving to be much stronger than anyone expected this year. Good hitting and fielding are the teams strongest assets. Robin Atkins, who was All-Conference last year, is having another great season. He is leading the team in hitting, fielding, and stolen bases. Eddie King has been Wesleyan’s most effective pit- and that there are long-term possibilities, even marriage, then there are only two choices for you. You can quit your job, and begin this relationship with legal blessings, or you can be discreet and hope that nobody finds out. If you should choose the latter, and the gamble you take shows signs of becoming a good investment, then you will know what action to take. On the other hand, if you are pretty sure that this is no more than a casual flirtation, my best advice would be to enjoy the poetry of unrequited passion, and to let it remain unrequited. The temporary pleasures would not be worth the risks to your career, and the co-ed involved could be hurt in the process. If you are a married man, then you came to the wrong person for advice. You need to consult a marriage counselor, a lawyer or take a good cold shower. Dear Wesleya, I am a very religious per son, and I often feel intimidated by others who don’t understand my convictions. Whenever I am in the cafeteria, the gym, or any other public place, I feel ostracized and lonely. How can I get people to like me for who I am, and not let my faith get in the way of friendships? Blessed and Unloved Dear Blessed, It seems that an overpreoc cupation with religious faith as an element of your personality is overshadowing other fine qualities that you may have. To have faith is an admirable thing, but certainly you have other admirable traits in common with those people who interest you as potential friends. Your religious convict ions need not get in the way of forming friendships unless you let them. You mustn’t feel you have to hide your beliefs because that would be dishon est. Rather you should go “public” with individual inter ests and hobbies which could attract a following. There are those who feel threatened by people with strong religious convictions. Perhaps they feel intimidated by the idea that you may disapprove of their actions and lifestyles. If your desire is to be accepted for yourself, then you must make it a point to try to accept those whose religious views differ from your own. With this understanding and with your apparent sincerity and determination, you should have no trouble making friends. Inning cher along with Gary Ange, and freshman Marvin Meadows and Bill Price. Key injuries to Dave Eubanks and Dana Wade early in March made things seem as if the Bishops were in for a rough season; however, hustle and determination have kept them alive. The season is drawing to a close and with a few breaks Wesleyan could still be confer ence champions. As the stand- To the Editors: I was extremely impressed with your most recent edition (April 4). You and your staff are to be commended for having gathered such worthwhile bits of information. It is amazing how in such a short newspaper, you have managed to cover everything of interest in Wesleyan campus life. AU of us are aware of the vital role played by the faculty advisor in such publications; therefore, to him I also extend my apprecia tion. The views and opinions of fellow students are always welcomed by most college students, giving them a sense of solidarity in views shared about various issues. The articles about social and sports events were accurate, and written to generate more student involvement. The best feature of all was “Dear Wesleya.” Having an authority figure to whom to turn is very comforting to students. Please do not change any thing in the future editions. Fred Frohbose There are many pros and cons for pledging a fraternity at North Carolina Wesleyan Col lege. Most students who pledge a fraternity are in their freshman year. From personal experience I have found that pledging a fraternity at Wes leyan College is a joke. When you arrive at school the beginning of your freshman year, you have a hard time adjusting, yet you make friends quickly with your own class mates. This continues until the beginning of the second semes ter, then, all of a sudden you find yourself surrounded by upperclassmen. These upper classmen are very friendly and will do anything for you, as if they were your older brothers. You later find out that these people are the brothers in the fraternities. You later find out were assigned by the fraternity The sun is shining brightly and the “children” want to go catch some of the rays. They grab their towels and blankets and head out for the yard. Everybody is having a good time until their gliding mother figrure arrives. “You know that you are not allowed to sun bathe in view of Tyler Drive. Now get up and ings are now we are tied for third behind Methodist College, and Virginia Wesleyan. With two games left with each team Wesleyan still can end up on top. The next home game is Tuesday here at 1 p.m. against Virginia Wesleyan. Dear Editors: In response to Mike CoUis’s article ateut the handicapped, I sympathize with the cry for better library operations, espe cially at night and on weekends, but we have to take into consideration how much it is going to cost to give preference to the handicapped. Not only in the case of the library but with other so-called “needed facili ties.” The present financial position is not good and tuition probably will be increased to meet any new demands. If these “facilities” are given consideration then it becomes obvious that the average stu dent will be paying for these facilities. As I see it, N. C. Wesleyan abeady has enough facilities for the handicapped. Ned Daryoush Dear Editors: In rebuttal to Sally Smith’s comments on ERA I would like to point out the discrepancies in her arguments. She said that “They should remain as indivi duals (women),” yet in another to recruit you. Then comes the time for the rush parties, and since you are such great friends with these people, you naturally feel very comfortable partying with them, then bids come out. NaturaDy, since you are such great friends with everyone in the fraternity you want to join in on the fun. You pledge the fraternity and have a lot of fun whUe also learning how not to devote any of your time to your studies, and learning how to flunk out. The fraternity puts so many burdens on you that you do not know whether you are “coming or going.” During the pledge period you see the real personalities emerge in your “brothers.” The fraternity can be useful, there are a few advantages. One is that each fraternity has hike over there behind those trees. It wiD not take you any longer than ten minutes to get there,” he said. “Also you girls know that you are not aDowed to sun bathe in view of boys—so get over there behind your dorm.” A typical day in the life of a student attending the Wesley an Kindergarten. The guys are not permitted to sun bathe in view of people entering or leaving the campus and the girls are not permitted to bathe anywhere except behind their dorm where no guys will see them. Here at Wesleyan guys are not permitted to engage in the deadly “sin” of seeing girls in remark she said that “ . . . women were created to be men’s helpers, to fulfill them and make them complete, whole human beings.” These remarks are contradictory be cause if a woman’s purpose in life is to fulfill a man’s life, then her individuality is already destroyed. I realize that her first statement referred to women as a whole promoting ERA, but this amendment does not destroy femininity, but rather guarantees rights to those women who want to take advantage of them. Furthermore, the statement “but if ERA passes, many women will abuse the purpose of it, and argue that they didn’t get a certain job because of their femininity when in fact, they may not have been qualified . . .” Court cases already occur on this issue and the passage of ERA would give the courts a concrete guideline to base the judgement on, and the courts certainly thoroughly review cases, not just grant retribution on a claim without investigating the allegations. Becky Bame a file that contains a copy of every test ever given in any course at Wesleyan College. These tests can be very useful in studying for a similar test you may be given in the same course. These local fraternities serve no social functions at all, except to recruit new pledges each year. They are unlike the fraternities of other coDeges and universities. One of their biggest fiaws is that once you become a fraternity brother here you cannot make friends easily or at all with any other people on campus, except those who might later pledge your fraternity. Personally I feel that you are better off being in the seventy to seventy-five per cent of the students who never join a fraternity here at Wesleyan. Alan Psimas bathing suits. The administra tion thinks we students have never seen a girl in a bathing suit. The skin exposed is too much for our “virgin” eyes—so they think. It is asinine for the adminis tration to assume that college students are lacking to such a degree the maturity and sophi stication to properly respond to this simple fact of humanity— the difference between the sexes. Maybe this issue should be brought up before the student body as a whole and let them decide. After all it's their bodies. Greg Allen To Pledge Or Not The Deadly ‘Sin’
