Dear wesleya: Godzilla on Monster Island Dear Wesleya, I am a new freshman on campus, and I’ve been seeing a boy for quite some time who is also enrolled as a freshman here. We dated in high school, and our decision to gfo to the same school was partly based on our romantic feelings for each other. Since arriving here, there have been many occasions where I’ve been introduced to some really attractive guys who have since then shown an interest in me. I would reaUy like to date one or two of them, but I feel responsible to my steady. How can I explain my feel- There’s no natural Protection Birth defects are forever. Unless you help. ings to him, realizing that we might be growing apart. After all, college is a lot different from high school Looking Over the Fence Dear Looking, It is quite natural for you to, want to spend some time away from your boyfiriend in order to pursue new interests, and to explore different college oppor tunities. Your new independ ence from home, family and familiar territory may be mak ing you feel restless. This is quite understandable and a necessary part of growing up. You will be doing a lot of growing up during your college career, and you will need some freedom to let your personality evolve naturally. I would sug gest that you let your boyfriend in on these new feelings of yours, as he may be feeling the same way himself, and could appreciate your discussing this with him. This does not mean that you must discontinue your friendship with him. Simply let him know that you appreciate his friendship and support, but that you can’t accept any ro mantic obligations at the time. Who knows, at the end of four years you may decide he’s the right one after all. Dear Wesleya, I am writing to you again as I received good advice from you last year. I hope you can help me now. Fm a junior this year, and as I look back on my first two years here, I realize that I haven’t taken advantage of all that college has to ofier a student. Fm really eager to do something wortWhile here, and in the past have been too shy to become involved in campus activities. For instance, I once auditioned for a play, but felt so embarrassed being in front of everybody that it turned me off. I realize now that I shouldn’t have felt so self-conscious. Now my image with friends and other people is that of an uninvolved, uncaring non-doer. What do you recommend for someone who wants to change his public image? Misunderstood and Undercover Dear Misunderstood, First, you must try to stop being so self-conscious, and self- denigrating. In your letter you still seem to be overly preoccu pied with other peoples opinion of you. The old motto “Believe in yourself and others will believe in you” still holds true. Join a club or organization that has some appeal for you, and one with few members. It’s best not to pursue overnight suc cess. Start slowly, and gradual ly you will buUd a following. It is a Friday night, and our whole famOy is tired. We move across the plain in our Japanese automobile toward the movie theater. My wife is driving, and beside her in the front seat sits my older son. The two smaller chUdren and I sit in the back seat. We are all sOent and steaming. I would be the father. The theater itself is quite new. We are all excited about the possibility of touching the floor without sticking to it. There is nothing quite like putting your foot down on a mixture of concrete, chocolate, gum, plastic, and diet Dr. Pepper. As a father, I do not recommend it. “Go to movies,” I say to my chOdren, “but do not touch the floor of the movie house.” But this is a new movie house, and we may put a foot down with some assurance of being able to pick it up again. The movie we are to see is .GODZILLA ON MONSTER IS LAND. Now I have no choice but to talk about this movie, and, should I be successful, the movie may seem to have some merit not to mention the possi bility of meaning. Since this is possible, I wish to render an aesthetic judgment immediate ly: GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND is the most excruciat ingly boring movie I can rem ember seeing. The experience of sitting through it is not one I wish to repeat. In my opinion, no sane person will want to see this movie. Of course, the world being what it is, this does not exclude enough of us. Like our automobile, the movie is Japanese, but our automobile is better made. The movie is so poorly dubbed that it is five minutes before I am able to lo(^ at t}ie screen. And the voices we do hear sug^;est that the reading cast was hastQy assembled from the staff of one of the more rural vocational high schools in one of our far western states. At one point in the movie, one of the characters sums up the whole situation. Locking over the ruins of an amusement park which has just served as the arena for a battle between monsters, he says, “God. this is a mess!” I am told that GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND is the latest in a series of movies which foUow the adventures of what appears to be a prehistor ic monster named Godzilla.
