PAGE 4 THE DECREE FmOAY, JANUARY 30, 1981 About the !$enior Class. Christmas in London The Twelve Days of Christmas, the time between Christmas Day and “Old Christmas” (Jan. 6) gets a great deal more attention in England than in the United States. Not having a Thanksgiving Day to signal the start of the season, the English wait until closer to Christmas Day and let the celebration last the full twelve days after. London is brilliantly decorated through the whole season. This was the backdrop for the 9-day tour to London and southern England that Dr. Allen Johnson conducted during the Christmas break. Three Wesleyan students; Abby Barnes, Cindy Johnson, and Mary Linda Weathers, were among the twelve who went. Leaving Raleigh- Durham Airport on Fri^y afternoon, Dec. 26, they flew overnight from New York to London. The President Hotel on Russell Square was home base for eight days. The first afternoon the group got an overall introduction to London by double-decker bus with a two- hour tour of the entire central city. A brilliant sunny day gave the lie to all of those tales of rain and-or fog in wintertime London. Although many days the sky was overcast, there was no rain, no fog, and no sub-freezing temperature. Sunday morning was a time for Petticoat Lane, a street market in Cockney east London, and that afternoon they visited Sir Christopher Wren’s great architectural masterpiece, St. Paul’s Cathedral. Not only was London decorated; but it was also crowded with visitors from all over the world. The lines to see the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London-the very embodiment of London’s history-were as long as they would have been on a hot day in July. The changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace was thronged, as was Westminister Abbey; especially with Spanish and Italian speaking tour groups. A stroll from the Abbey past Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, 10 Downing Street and the Horse Guards at the War Office on Whitehall ended in Trafalgar Square before the statue of Lord Nelson. That provided the opportunity to spend an afternoon in the National Gallery, one of the great art museums of the world. New Year’s Eve, when the “go-as-you-please” pass for the London transport underground and buses expired, they stayed close to the hotel, touring the British Museum about three blocks away. Then, in the afternoon, they went to Madame Toussaud’s Wax Works, the oldest and most famous wax museum in the world. That evening, as 1981 came in, there were 600,000 people in Trafalagar Square. The group spent the evening listening to jazz bands. On New Year’s Day they took their rail pass and set out from Victoria Station for Canterbury to see the great gothic cathedral which housed the shrine of St. Thomas a’ Becket and was the object of Chaucer’s pilgrims. The following day they journeyed in the opposite direction to Oxford, where they toured several colleges to sample the life of the great English university. Afternoons were frequently given over to shopping and evenings to London theatre and to first- run movies. When Saturday arrived, and it was time to leave for Heathrow Airport and the flight home, all felt that it had been too short. London seems to grow on you. A special library fund has been set up in memory of Whelette Collins. Contributions of books, records, and cash donations (in any amount) will be gladly accepted. All books and records should reflect Whelette’s interest in the arts; pertaining to the subjects of theatre, dance, visual arts, and poetry. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund is asked to contact Ralph Traxler or Phyllis Gitlin in the Theatre Department. From The Class Officers Written By Monica Best Graduation is almost upon us and this year the Senior Class will be prepared for it. Sometime in February the class officers will be meeting with Emma Foster to plan the activities for the week-end of Commencement. In addition, those present at the class meeting held on the 19th of January decided to work towards having a Cocktail Party for the class. The party would take place just prior to Commencement. Due to the fact that our funds are very limited, we will sponsor a variety of fund raising activities. Among the numerous projects that we are planning, there will be raffles for dinners at Pizza Hut and J.R.’s Steak House, and Bake Sales. (Any additional ideas will be welcomed.) However, without the support of the entire class we won’t be successful. Spend a night at the Hotel Baltimore By Hannah Ford Lanford Wilson’s award winning “The Hot L Baltimore” will be the theater’s first production of 1981. Lanford Wilson is also the author of “Tally’s Folly” which is currently on Broadway and recently won a Pulitzer Prize. The cast is : Anthony Pierce as Bill Lewis, Jone Marshall as the Girl, Daisy Thorpe as Millie, Cathy Ballou as Mrs. Bellotti, Evelyn Ford as April, Sim Wilde as Mr. Morse, Christyle Jackson as Jackie, Robert (Dino) Comer as Jamie, Eric Sowl as Mr. Katz, Christine Kelly as Suzy, Jeff Hartzog as Suzy’s John, Virginia Evans as Mrs. Oxenham, Ken Hopkins as Paul Granger III, Ted Carlton as the Cab Driver, and Kevin Seymore as the Delivery Boy. The play will run February 11th through the 14th, and again February 18th through the 21st. Therefore, we ask that every member of the Senior Class volunteer some of their time and money in support of the projects. Also, any financial assistance from the Faculty and the Student Body will be greatly appreciated. In conclusion, we would like to remind everyone that the deadline for ordering Announcements is almost here. It would be wise for all Graduating Seniors to ascertain that they have met all of the necessary requirements, so that you won’t be “surprised” at the end. T A R H E E L S.G.A. Newsletter The S.G.A. is getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas break. As the new semester begins, many issues and proposals are being presented to the Senate. For instance, subject to the Dean’s approval, it has been proposed that the maximum number of credit hours be raised from sixteen to eighteen which would eliminate the costly expense caused by a schedule overload. However, as I said earlier, this is strictly a proposal and not an official fact. It has also been established that contributions to the Library are being accepted in memory of Whelette Collins.
