i VOLUME XIX, NUMBER 6 NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN COLLEGE, ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1981 District III Academic All Americans Two Wesleyan College basketball players have been named to the Academic All- American Team for District III. Paul Hess and Keith Jones received the honor from the Paul Hess Career Corner by A1 Garlick Remember 01’ Peter, the hardiest Partier of them all? “Yep” he kept partying down to the wire. It was May before the Olympion Chugger faced the fact that after graduation it was up to him to make his breaks. May was also the time when “Or Pete” wanted the placem'ent director to cover his tracks and find him a job. Alas, good “Or Pete” resorted to hoping for a miracle. You ask ‘.‘What has this got to do with me?” If you will graduate in May, Peter may be singing your song. Again you ask “Why are you writing this?” The answer is simply to announce the series of Career Programs that will be running from now until May. They will consist of career awareness programs, job seeking skill development workshops, and recruitment interviews. The key to making the most of these is preparedness. The people who visit campus to participate in the career awareness program are here to help you find out about their field. If you handle these situations properly you can develop these individuals into valuable career contacts. (If you are interested in how to do this come to the workshop on Developing Career Contacts, March 16, 10:50 a.m. in the Interfaith Lounge.) The rest of the individuals coming to campus are recruiters and their purpose for coming is obvious. Finally the job-seeking skills development workshops have been designed .to teach students skills they can utilize in advancing their careers. Someone once said that opportunity is the point at which preparedness and luck meet. So my message is straight forward - be prepared to make your breaks! I strongly suggest that all seniors interested in obtaining a job complete their credential files and develop their resumes now so that you are prepared to take advantage of an opportunity when it arises. If you choose not to be prepared then prepare for opportunity to pass you by. Below is a list of the up coming career related programs: Wednesday, February 25, 2:00-5:00 p.m. - Law School Career Day, Campbell University. Title III is working for Wesleyan North Carolina Wesleyan College is now into its second of a three year program sponsored by Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Title III provides funds, under what is called the Strengthening Developing Institutions Program (SDIP), to assist qualified institutions of higher education in their attempts to improve their services to students and the general public. Wesleyan will receive in excess of $430,000 over the three year period. The major components of the program for 1980-81 are: 1.) The establishment of a Computer Center. When established, the Computer Center will handle the admissions, registration, and business affairs of the college, provide data for institutional research and give assistance and exposure to computers to faculty and students. 2.) Expansion of the Evening College. A full-time director of the Evening College, Dr. Carleton McKita, was named to lead in the creation of the new design for an evening degree program for students unable to attend in the regular daytime schedule. This expanded curriculum has just begun in the 1981 Spring semester. 3.) A Career Counseling and Placement office and a Learning Resources Center have been initiated to compliment Wesleyan’s already established writing lab. 4.) Workshops. A variety of workshops, travel funds, and consultants are available to faculty and staff to assist in better understanding students and in delivering better instructional programs. 5.) Institutional Research and Long Range Planning. The college is in the process of conducting research in a variety of areas in order to better set its long range goals and project its directions in the years to come.
