Ralph Sampson, the 7-4
junior center at the University
of Virginia, is such big name
around Charlottesville, Va.,
that he’s been the subject of a
song that has been playing on
radio station WXAM since the
Christmas season.
The song follows the tune
of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer” and is entitled “Big
Ralph the Giant Center.” The
tune tells of the recruitment of
Big Ralph by college coaches
and then the attempt by the
Boston Celtics to lure
Sampson in the NBA after his
freshman year at Virginia.
The first part goes as follows:
“Big Ralph the giant center
“Was so big and awfully tall
“That if you ever saw him
“You woiild feel so very
small.
“All of the nation’s coaches
“Used to beat upon his door
“They knew if they got
Ralph
“Easily their team would
score.”
And then, the part about
Red Auerbach, general
manager of the Celtics, trying;
to entice Big Ralph to join the
Celics:
“Then one foggy Christmas
eve
“Auerbach came to say
“Big Ralph with your dunk
so keen
“Won’t you drive my Celt
machine?
“But Ralph didn’t like that
“He didn’t like the NBA
“Ralph’s heart was in
Virginia
“Playing for the U-VA.”
JONES AND DANIELS
SELECTED IN DRAFT
North Carolian Wesleyan
had two members of its 1981
baseball team, which finished
fourth in the nation, selected
in the Major League
Midwinter Draft.
Mike Jones, an outfielder
from Arvonia, Virginia, was
selected in the First Round by
the San Francisco Giants.
Jones was the 12th player
taken in draft. Among Jones’
many accomplishments was
his selection to the College
World Series All-Tournament
Team.
Sam Daniels, a pitcher
from Wanchese, North
Carolina was the 160th
selection and was chosen by
the San Diego Padres.
Both James and Daniels
will report to Arizona in
February.
Women^s Basketball
The North Carolina
Wesleyan Battling Bishops
women’s team was upset
early in the week by Virginia
Wesleyan (71-69) and took the
hurt out on Greensboro
College Saturday in a 70-35
romp in Greensboro.
“We played a lot better in
Greensboro,” said Wesleyan
coach Laura Ferrell. “We
started out in our man-to-man
defense against Greensboro
and we played much better as
a result. We were more
aggressive and alert.”
Wesleyan was led by
Priscilla Rickenbacker
(Kings Mountain High School,
Grover, NO, a 1981 AWSF All
American, and Rita Johnson
(Pine Forest High School,
Fayetteville, NO with 18 and
25 points respectively aginst
Greensboro. In the Virginia
Wesleyan game Rickenbacker
led all scorers with 19,
Johnson had 18, and Rose

North Carolina Wesleyan
Colleg has changed quite a bit
since 1963, but in looking back
at some old issues of The
Decree, I have discovered
that there are some things
that haven’t changed at all.
The major two things that
haven’t changed are the need

Spring marks the return
of our golf team to the links,
and with a stronger team
overall one can look for them
to challenge for the top spot in
the conference.
Last Spring was a very
mediocre season for the team,
finishing just under .500. With
the loss of MVP Dave Knorr, it
would follow that one might
expect another mediocre
showing. This Spring,
however, there are many new
faces on the scene and once
again the team is beginning to
look competitive.
Mike Malak, a Senior
from Pennsylvaia, returns
this year, and good things are
expected from him. First year
players Chuck Davis, Jim
Mimms, Carey Griffin, Skip
Barth, Mark DeCaro, and Jim
Schurr should greatly
improve the team.
The team has already
begun its preparation, and is
looking forward to early
March when they will take on
Nebraska Wesleyan in the
seasons first match. Good
luck, Golf team.
for writers and staff for the
newspaper, and complaints
about the cafeteria food. Old
issues of The Decree are
covered with complaints
about the food. As a matter of
fact, the lead story in the Feb.
2,1965 issue was one reporting
a students’ protest against the
cafeteria food.
I have also noticed in the
back issues, that the editor is
constantly asking for writers
and staff members. Some
things never change, I
suppose - but there have been
some interesting changes that
have occurred at the college
since 1963.
For instance, the Battling
Bishops, as we now know
them, used to be Joyners. In
the February 27 issue in 1963,
it was reported that the
Joyners had defeated Clacks
in tournament play by a slim
58-57 margin in a come-from-
behind victory.
By 1964, the Joyners had
adopted the Bishop name that
they still have today. But one
of the big stories in the Feb. 12
issue of the same year was
headed “Bishop Bowlers 4th
in Dixie Conference.” That’s
right. Once upon a time
Wesleyan had a bowling team
- and a pretty good one at
that!
One of the top headlines in
a 1965 issue of The Decree was
one concerning an issue that
we are all still very aware of
today - alcohol on campus.
The SGA took action at that
time to make the punishment
for possessing or consuming
alcohol on campus less
severe. The neyv punishment
included social probation for a
first offense. While on
probation, a student could not
have a car on campus, could
not participate in athletic
events, could not attend any
campus activities; parties,
etc.; could not hold any office
on campus, would not be
granted dating privileges, and
his parents would be notified
of the offense. If the student
were not to abide by these
rules, he would be suspended
for not less than one semester.
In 1966 plans were just
being completed for the snack
bar.
In 1967 Wesleyan’s
wrestling team was in a good
position to win the DIAC
crown. Whatever happened to
them? 1 suppose they got lost
in the shuffle with the Bowling
team.
In 1968 the Minimester, or
January term, was being
discussed. They voted it in,
but it disappeared once again
two years ago.
Among the news in
February of 1%9, was that the
library received a
photocopier, and Pi Epsilon
held an “Ugly Man” contest.
It is interesting to look
back and see what changes
have taken place and what
changes have not taken place.
But it still remains that the
complaints about cafeteria
food will never change.
together various activities
that students requested. At
this time the women’s indoor
soccer club and the men and
women’s basketball is being
played. These activities are
going quite well and we hope
Uiat many of the students will
come out and support their
fellow students.
January 28 was the start
for the basketball game. The
BOMB SQUAD defeated
INTRA-5 and the GOLDEN
HOARDE defeated the
KILLER BEES for the men.
For the women, THE
WINNERS defeated GET
THE EDGE.
Upcoming events for the
remainder of the semester are
aerobic dancing, taught by an
instructor from Rocky Mount,
softball or mini soccer,
another course in CPR, tennis,
frisbee, and a special event to
be announced at a later date.
Other events that we of the
Intramural Department
would like to see started are
racquetball, golf, and a track
and field day.
If anyone is interested in
officiating for the Department
please speak to Ann Roberts,
RD at North, or any IM
official, Terry Dean, Henry
Waters, and Wallace Johnson.
There are always officiating
clinics for each IM sport that
requires officials and there is
a need for people who are
willing to spend a little time to
learn about the events, this is
not a skill that will just last for
the period of the event for
there are always a need for
officials at high schools and
recreation centers. If anyone
is interested pleace contact
any IM Department member.
Come out and keep the
events going. If you are not on
a varsity sport but, you would
like to play on a team then
intramurals is the answer for
you. Get your friends together
and get ready for the IM
spring season.
