psychology, has joined the
Wesleyan faculty. Dr.
Carsten’s received his Ph.D.
from the University of North
Carolina-Greensboro. Also at

Dr. Connell enjoys teaching
at a small school like
Wesleyan, rather than a big
school like North Carolina
State University where he
taught this past summer. He
prefers the small classes
where there is better com
munication between the
teacher and students.
Dr. Robert Steven Ferebee
received his Ph.D. in English
from the University of New
Mexico. He has done studies
on twentieth century
literature and British
literature. Dr. Ferebee has
previously taught at the
University of Florida in
Gainesville, Fla., and at the
University of New Mexico. He
is assistant professor of
English at Wesleyan,

University of Missouri with a

Phillips Petroleum Company
in Bartlesville, Okla. Also, Dr.
Nordquist has taught at
Virginia Community College.
He is now assistant professor
of chemistry.

the Pittsboro school system.
North Carolina Wesleyan
College, with these new facul
ty members, will be an even
more competitive small col
lege not only in North
Carolina, but also in the
United States.
G)ach Lyons Leaves Wesleyan
By MAILE KALINOWSKI
Decree Staff
On Wednesday, Sept. 26,
1984, Mike Lyons resigned as
head coach of the women’s soc
cer team, assistant coach of
the men’s soccer team, and
head coach of the tennis team.
Lyons was asked to resign by
John R. McCarthy, Wesleyan's
athletic director.
On Tuesday, Sept. 25, the
day before Lyons resigned, the
women’s soccer team played
N. C. State. During that game,
Lyons was given a red card by
the official which meant he had
to leave the soccer field. The
reason Lyons was red-carded
was because the official felt
Lyons was too verbal and caus
ing a distraction during the
game.
That evening, the official of
the game telephoned John Mc
Carthy and shared with him
his unhappy feelings about the
game and his anger toward
Mike Lyons. Less than 12
hours after that telephone call,
Lyons was called into McCar
thy’s office.
However, this was not the
first time Coach Lyons had
been given a warning by an of
ficial. During a soccer game
against Methodist College on
Sept. 18, 1984, Lyons was
given a yellow card, which is
not as severe as a red card.
Lyons received the warning
after he displayed his anger
because one of his players,
Kelly K«nt, had been hit and
was lying on the field. When
Kelly was taken to the
hospital, the diagnosis was
that she had a concussion.
After Lyons resigned.
Coach Ferrell, the men's soc
cer coach, was asked to take
over the women’s team. He
agreed. The players on the
women’s team had already
been coached by Ferrell once
before. Coach Lyons took the
men’s team to a tournament in
Florida, where he coached the
team to a first place victory.
The reason Lyons took Fer
rell’s team to Florida was
because Coach Ferrell’s wife
was expecting to have her
baby, and Ferrell, obviously,
wanted to be with her.
Now, unfortunately, the
women’s team seems to be suf
fering. On Oct. 17, 1984, the
team traveled to Virginia
Wesleyan College without a
soccer coach. Instead, Michael
Fox, the baseball coach, was
present at the game. The
result of the game was a 2-2 tie
when only two weeks earlier
N. C. Wesleyan beat Va.
Wesleyan 5-0.
The resignation of Mike
Lyons has affected many peo
ple other than the soccer and
tennis players. A petition was
given to Dean Fritz which ex
pressed the dissatisfacion of
the way ^e situation of Lyons’
resignation was handled. The
petition had over 150
signatures. Concerning the
petition. Dean Fritz said, “It’s
good to see the students con
cerned about the happenings
on campus.”
Over the summer, before
the 1984 fall semester. Coach
Lyons had recruited at least 10
players to attend Wesleyan
and play soccer. Now that
Lyons is no longer coaching,
several players are not inten
ding to return lo Wesleyan
next year.
The resignation of Coach
Lyons appears to have hurt
the women’s soccer program
at N. C. Wesleyan College.
The exact reason for Coach
Lyons’ resignation is still
obscure. When asked why
Lyons resigned, McCarthy
responded, “No comment.”
