Fraternity rocks for mental health
On Saturday, April 5, Station
Square Mall in uptown Rocky
Mount was full of rockers. These
were not heavy metal rockers or
punk rockers. These were
rockers for charity.
The 12-hour Rock-A-Thon,
sponsored by Alpha Delta Chi
fraternity, pulled in $ 1,100 for
the Nash/Rocky Mount Mental
Health Association. Part of the
money that was raised will go
toward the purchase of special
hand puppets that will help
teach the Mental Health Asso
ciation patients about child
abuse. The remainder of the
money will go in a fund for facil
ities to house the mentally dis
abled.
Alpha Delta Chi president
Steve Scalzi said that the rock-a-
thons have been a tradition
with the fraternity. Scalzi said,

Richard B. Dollar, vice presi
dent of development at N.C.
Wesleyan College, was charged
with Driving While Intoxicated
on March 26.
His trial date has been set for
May 1.
Dollar was stopped at the in
tersection of Raleigh Road and
Evergreen Road by officer M.T.
Wiggins of the Rocky Mount
Police department at 2 a.m. Of
ficer Wiggins was out of town
and unavailable forcomment,
but Major J.W. Richardson of
the Rocky Mount Police said,
“Dollar was charged with DWI,
and there were no unusual cir
cumstances involved in this
particular case.”
When contacted. Dollar re
fused comment on the matter,
saying he could not make any
statement about the incident
until after the matter went to
court May 1. Dollar did confirm
that he was not representing the
college when the incident oc
curred.
The campus community has
not responded publicly to what
has taken place. Chairman of
the Board Judge J. Phil Carlton
of Pinetops has been involved in
a trial all week and has been
unavailable for comment. Col
lege President S. Bruce Pette-
way was also unavailable for
comment. John J. Ferebee, first
vice chairman of the Board of
Trustees, said, “The matter has
not been discussed by the Board
of Trustees.”
“It pulls the members together
and puts money toward a good
cause.”
The participants began at 9
a.m. and kept rocking until 9
p.m. with five minute breaks
each hour. The rockers consist
ed of three Chi brothers, three
Chi pledges, three Chi little sis-\
ters, and one celebrity guest \
chair. The celebrity rocking \
chair was filled by a different
Wesleyan faculty or staff
member each hour. Guest
rockers included Dr. Steve Fere
bee, Dr. Ken Finney, Dr. Carlton
McKita, Dr. George Connell,
Daisy Thorp, Pam Derek, and
Dorothy Phifer.
The money raised for charity
came through donations, spon
sorships, and a dinner raffle.
Many local businesses helped
with the event. Food was donat
ed by Hardee’s, Just What the
Doctor Ordered, Trax, and
drinks were provided by Coca-
Cola of Rocky Mount.

Approximately 200 people,
consisting of faculty, students,
and parents, attended the an
nual Honors Convocation on
Sunday, Apr. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
ITie convocation, one of the few
left this semester, was held in
the Private Dining Room of the
Wesleyan Cafeteria.
The evening began with a
duet from Bruce Belvin on the
alto saxaphone and Dr. Karen
Carney on the piano. Dr. Rex-
ford Tucker next gave the invo
cation, which was followed by ,a
“welcome” address by the Pres
ident, Dr. S. Bruce Petteway.
The Wesleyan Singers fol
lowed Dr. Petteway with the
song “Die Machtigal” by Felix
Mendelssohn. Following the vo
ices of the Wesleyan Singers
was the introduction by Cheryl
Tuttle of guest speaker Robert
R. Walton, who delivered a
speech of only 15 minutes in
length.
Dr. Stephen Fritz next took
the podium to present the aca
demic awards. Highlighting the
more than 30 awards presented
on Sunday were the Outstand
ing Academic Achievement
Award, which went to Cathe
rine Johnson; The National Bi
centennial Scholar Award,
which Beth Hodson received;
and the Alumni Distinguished
Scholar Awards, which was |
given to Dr. Kenneth V. Finney.
Dr. Carleton McKita followed
Dean Fritz with the presenta
tion of the Student life awards.
This year’s Algernon Sydey Sul-
livan Award went to Marsha
Sharpe. The Nu Gamma Phi
Professor of the Year Award
was presented to Daisy Thorp,
who received a standing ova
tion from a large audience for
the achievement. Cheryl Tuttle
was awarded the President’s
Cup and also received a stand
ing ovation from the crowd.
The evening concluded at
about 8:45 p.m. with the singing
of the college Alma Mater and a
short benediction by Dr. Tucker.
A reception, complete with
cookies and punch, immediately
followed the program.
