page 4 — THE DECREE — SEPTEMBER 19,1986 Bishops slip past Nebraska, 35-34 (Editor’s note: Wesleyan has no football team, but we can still imagine what might have been. Pleasant fantasies...) By TOM RIVERS The North Carolina Wesleyan football team came away with an impressive 35-34 win over national powerhouse Nebraska the first game of the 1986 football season Sept. 6. "Our offense was very pro ductive, but our defense still needs work," was the comment of rookie head coach Keith Bauer about the initial game of the season. Wesleyan struck first in the (Continued from Page 1) Dollar said. However, Dollar added that, "In view of what we consider to be an overwhelming response to the advance campaign, the day it self, and now the follow-up effort, our concerns have been proven wrong.” Silva Parker, a member of the Development Office in charge of tabulating community donations, said that "Basically 90 percent, if not better, of the calls (to the com munity) have been made. Of that total, 75 percent or better have given gifts to the college. Major do nations were made from such busi nesses as Hardees, Boddie-Noell En- Bishops ranked 5th in pre-season poll North Carolina Wesleyan's soc cer squad began the season ranked fifth in the South by the Inter collegiate Soccer Association of America. The Bishops, 12-6-1 last season, were steady fixtures in last season’s South rankings — getting as high as second in the South and 13th nationally. UNC-Greensboro, a Dixie Con ference foe for the Division III Bishops, led the South rankings as well as the national list. Of the nine other teams ranked in the South's Top Ten, the Bis hops will face five of them. SOUTH TOP TEN 1. UNC-Greensboro* 2. Bethany College 3. Emory University 4. Mary Washington 5. The score capped an opening 99-yard drive that lasted only three playsd and took only 43 seconds off the clock. The initial play from the Wesleyan one-yard line was an end- around by Barry "Goose" Guthrie. He picked up 16 yards on the play to move the ball to the Bishop 17- yard line. On the next play, Goggins threw a strike to Kenny "Crazy Legs" Anderson for a 14- yard gain to put the ball on the 31- yard line and set up the first score of the season for the Bishops. After the Goggins to McGee score, Jamie "Surefoot" Thom split terprises, and some of the local banks." Overall, Kincheloe feels that "people seem to have a better feeling for the college than they have ever had" and that good feeling translated into a positive community response. The campaign received a posi tive response from the faculty and staff of the college as well. Accord ing to Dollar, 85 percent of the calls on faculty and staff have been made, with 90 percent of those called making contributions. Dol lar said that many of the faculty contributions reflected "modest in creases," and added that, "We are pleased with the very positive response we have received from the faculty." This year's contribution and goal were short of last year's record contribution and goal for a num ber of reasons, according to Dollar. "During the past year we have had a number of major contri butors, seven, go out of business, re locate, or unfortunately, die. They are no longer around or in a posi tion to continue their support," Dollar said. The total gift from these sources amounted to $24,000 last year, and the Development Of fice adjusted this year's goal accord ingly. Lectures set Dr. Maud H. The Comhuskers of Nebraska scored twice in the first quarter to move ahead 14-7 going into the second quarter. The Bishop offense really turn ed things on the second quarter, with three touchdowns, while the defense held the Comhuskers to only one touchdown in the quarter. The first score of the second quarter came on a one-play drive that took but 12 seconds. "Crazy Legs" Anderson made a specta cular diving catch into the end zone on a pass from Goggins for a 72-yard touchdown for the bishops. Thom's conversion tied the game at 14-14. Nebraska came back on the next play with a 100-yard plus kick- off return for the touchdown. This gave the Comhuskers a 21-14 lead after the PAT. The Bishops did not stand for being behind, coming back with two scores in the final 3:58 of the first half. The first touchdown came on a two-yard run by Mike "Apple Pie" Dolliver which capped a seven-play, 50-yard drive that began with a 48-yard kickoff retum by James "Am" Anderson. "Surefoot" Thom converted the kick to to the score at 21-21. Thom's incredible kickoff and a sensational effort by the special team downed the ball on the Comhusker 11-yard line with only 1:14 remaining in the half. The Comhuskers went for the score with a long pass, but Marc "Stick 'em" Coletrane intercepted the un derthrown ball and returned it to the Comhusker seven-yard line. Goggins took the bill into the end zone on the next play on a bootleg and the Bishops moved into a 27- 21. The extra point was missed at the buzzer, and the Bishops went Nebraska came out in the second half with a full head of steam and ran back the opening kickoff for an 89-yard touchdown, made the PAT, and moved ahead 28-27. Wesleyan struggled to get on the board during the third quarter, but eventually came up with a score with only 4:01 remaining in the qaurter. The touchdown, a 31- yard pass by "Am" Anderson to "Crazy Legs" Anderson, put the Bishops ahead 33-28. Coach Keith Bauer then made the decision to go for the two-point conversion, which paid off for the Bishops as Greg "Oak Tree" Harlow caught a pass from "Am" Anderson to put the Bishops up 35-28. The teams exchanged posses sions throughout the fourth quar ter with neither team really threa tening to score until the Com huskers put together a 71-yard drive which ended with a touch down with only three seconds re maining in the game. Sensing the Bishops were reeling, Nebraska coach Tom Osbome made the decision to go for the win with a two-point con version attempt. The Nebraska quarterback rolled right and spot ted a wide open receiver in the end 'Our special teams and dfense need a lot of work, but our offense was spectacular. We were very luck to win this game over a much better Comhusker team," were the comments of Head Coach Keith Bauer about the Bishops' perfor mance on the field. The Farm Fresh players of the game were Barry Guthrie for a great offensive game for the Bishops, and Marc Coletrane was defensive player of the game with 42 solo tackles and four intercep tions. Only one player was put on the injured reserve list, Thomas Sleepy Taylor, who experienced a bad hangnail and is expected to return to action in about two weeks.
