Student athletes need
more credit for effort
Fall Dean's List announced
The role of the student-
athlete is admired, and some
times even envied, by people
across the nation, but people
looking at student-athletes
many times do not under
stand what these student-
athletes go through in their
college career in their efforts
to earn a degree.
Student-athletes are re
quired to take the same num
ber of classes, do the same
amount of homework, and
take the same tests as all other
students. In addition to the
work, the student-athlete gets
to look forward to approxi
mately 2-3 hours of practice
per day when they do not
have a game or match. There
are even some times when
these student-athletes have to
miss important class lectures
to travel three or four hours
to compete in their respective
intercollegiate sport.

Director of Financial Aid
The Reagan Administration
has recently proposed an income
contingent loan program. Edu
cation Secretary William Bennett
called the proposal "the greatest
single advance in student aid over
a decade." Other administration
officials suggest students would not
be as hesitant to accept loans
because monthly repayment would
be based upon future earnings.
The idea of tying repayment to
income has been around for over
30 years and is periodicity dis-
First-year students
make Phi Eta Sigma
On March 30, the Phi Eta
Sigma Chapter of North Carolina
Wesleyan College will induct 13
outstanding first year students.

scholastic honor society for college
freshman. Inductees must attain a
3.50 minimum grade point average
their first semester a first year at
NCWC.
The Induction Ceremony will
be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Russell
Chapel. The following students will
be inducted:
Carl Anderson,Melanie Bolling,
Philip Bryant, Melissa Corpew,
Lisa Hale, Taher Husain, Renee
Jandrew, Ava Jefferson, Linda
Kline, Allen P. Mills, Teresa Gail
Pitts, David Poole, and Francine
Ray.
Many people seem to think
the life of a student-athlete is
a glamorous, fun-filled one
but, most of the time it is just
the opposite of that. Sure
there are times when the
student-athlete gets his or her
name in the paper for doing
something, spectacular or for
being the key figure in the
team's winning effort, but it
is not often that he/she is
recongnized for their aca
demic achievement off of the
field.
Perhaps all of die college
students across the nation
should stop and look at the
time and effort the student-
athlete gives to represent
his/her school and the extra
demand taken on by these
students. It's time for student-
athletes to start receiving the
credit and support from their
fellowstudents that they have
long deserved.
cussed by the financial aid
community. In each discussion the
same problems seem to surface.
The most significant ones are as
follows:
1. The plan is relatively unfair.
Students who have high incomes
after graduation would pay off
much less than students who
accept lower paying public serve
position.
2. The government would not
subsidize interest rates as it
currently does for the Guaranteed
Student Loan Program. Students
would either pay market rate in
terest or defer payment until after
graduation. If interest is deferred it
would add large amounts to the
principal to be repaid. A student
who borrows 14,000 may expect to
graduated with a indebtness of
18,000.
3. Some low income borrowers
would still be paying on their loans
when their children begin college.
In fact some may still owe at
retirement.
4. Colleges would be required to
recalculate student payments on a
yearly basic. Student would have to
supply income information to col
lege loan offices until their loan
was repaid.
If the program is enacted it
would place many Wesleyan stu
dents under a disadvantage when
repayment time rolls around. Stu- ,
dents should remain alert to the
dangers involved with this program
and remind their representatives in
Congress of their concerns.
