Campus likes Decree By TOM RIVERS Members of the President's Coun cil of North Carolina Wesleyan College feel The Decree is fulfilling the responsibilities a college news paper has to its community. These responsibilities, according to mem bers of the council, are to report current issues to the community and to keep members of the community aware of what is happening on campus. The members of the council think a college newspaper is good for the college. Ray Kirkland, Vice President of Finance, said a college newspaper is an "excellent opport unity for students to express them selves. It is a valuable part of the education process and should be available to students." Dr. Marshall Brooks, Acting Academic Dean, said that "it assists the college in communicating plans and issues to the community " that otherwise the community would be unaware of. The council members support The Decree and feel it has improved in its purpose over the last two years. Carl Pagles, Dean of Admis sions and Financial Aid, said "he is always willing to part The Decree in the hands of a prospective student. Pagles also said, "I think the paper has become a better instrument of communication this year than it was last year. I look forward to seeing it F orce Make It Work D istance Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 1987 — May your future be blessed with all good. Brooks pointed our that The Decree is now mailed to the members of the Board of Trustees. He said, "We (the coun cil) have enough confidence in The Decree to do that." "I'm appreciative of the student involvement and I like to see that," said Brooks, expressing the need for student involvement in The Decree. Kirkland said, "the more student involvement, the more I like." The only main problem with The Decree the members expressed was the lack of time the students put into developing the stories. Richard Dollar, Vice President of Develop ment, said he felt the reporters were sometimes unsure of what they needed to know and therefore resulted in a poor story appearing in The Decree. Dollar, however, said he feels The Decree has a tremendous amount of potential in being a service to the institution by serving the student body. Members of the council felt there are a few things that could be added to The Decree to make it more useful to the students. Dr. Carleton McKita, Dean of Student Life, said he would like to see more reporting of upcoming events in the Residence Halls and upcoming events for events such as Spring Fling. Brooks said he would like to see more photographs and from time-to-time maybe even a photographic essay of on-campus events. The Decree seems to be fulfilling the duties of what a college news paper should do for the community. According to the members of the council the council members en courage student involvement in The Decree and hope that continued improvement will take place with The Decree. Cutbacks in loans have major impact As many as four of every 10 students who have Guarenteed Student Loans may not be able to get a GSL for next year, financial aid experts now are saying. More than half the "independent" students — those who are financially on their own — will lose all or part of their GSLs for 1987-88, adds Dr. Jerry Davis of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), which in early March reassessed the impact on students of new aid rules going into effect this year. The impact, in fact, seems to be much more dramatic than educators predicted last October.
