Honor society inducts six
Six students at North Carolina
Wesleyan College were inducted
into Psi Chi, the national psy
chology honor society, at the end
of the fall semester.
The ceremony was conducted
by Dr. Jay R. Quinan, assistant
professor of psychology and
chairman of the psychology de
partment. Dr. Quinan serves as
faculty adviser.
Wesleyan students inducted
were Dick Bowen, a senior psy
chology and philosophy/religion
major from Burlington; Elizabeth

The North Carolina Wesleyan
College Library is currently fea
turing an exhibit by Michael
Podesta, calligraphic artist. Po-
desta’s calligraphy embraces
Christian scriptures, literature,
and ancient mottos.
The Virginia artist has exhib
ited his designs several times in
the past at the college and in the
Rocky Mount area. Podesta has

psychology and English major
from Rocky Mount; Charles E.
Burnette, Jr., a senior psychology
major from Roanoke Rapids;
Philip A. Cook, a senior psychol
ogy major from Tarboro; Chris
topher R. Matthews, a senior psy
chology major from Cary; and
Lawanda D. Warthen, a junior
psychology major from West
Palm Beach, Fla.
These students were selected
because they have demonstrated
an active interest in the science of
created unique illustrations using
familiar biblical verses, as well as
using quotes from Shakespeare,
Wordsworth, and Thoreau.
Podesta engaged in a wide
assortment of occupations before
his career as a professional callig
rapher. While growing up in
California, he worked as a tender
in his father’s underwater con
struction company. He has also

show promise as indicated by
their academic records.
The purpose of Psi Chi is to
encourage, stimulate, and main
tain excellence in scholarship and
to advance the science of psy
chology. Psi Chi chapters are lo
cated at more than 685 senior
colleges and universities nation
wide. The organization is an af
filiate of the American Psycho
logical Association and a mem
ber of the Association of College
Honor Societies.

During the 1990 Symposium
next Monday through Wednes
day, North Carolina Wesleyan
College will explore local and
multi-national issues affecting
the environment. A distinguished
panel of speakers will examine
not only the problems facing the
earth’s living systems, but the so
lutions to a cleaner world as well.
Our Island Earth — What Can
We Eastern North Carolinians
Do? will highlight environmental
issues relevant to the region, the
state, the country, and the world.
A full agenda of lecture topics
ranges from the tropical rain for
ests of Latin America to the
banks of the Tar River, with a
focus on the specific environ
mental concerns of Eastern North
Carolina.
Also, representatives from
environmental advocacy groups
will give brief addresses and will
be available for questions during
the symposium.
Dr. Arch Sharer, professor of
biology, and Dr. Terry Smith,
associate dean and professor of
English, have undertaken a con
siderable task in the coordination
of this year’s event. The sympo
sium schedule is an extensive
one, as several presentations are
given in each time slot, offering
the participant a choice of topics.
Dr. Terence L. Donaldson will
open the symposium on Monday
evening with the topic Bioreme
diation of Hazardous Waste
Sites. Bioremediation is a method
of using microorganisms, such as
bacteria, to decompose toxic
wastes.
Dr. Donaldson is presently re
sponsible for technical manage
ment of several bioremediation
and biotreatment projects at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory in
Tennessee. He has authored or
coauthored over 60 published
papers and reports, over 80 pres
entations and seminars, and he
holds one patent.
The first morning of the sym
posium will feature House
Speaker Joe Mavretic speaking
on The Environment: A Concern
of All of Our Citizens. Mavretic is
a native of Eastern North Caro
lina, a farmer, and a retired mili
tary officer. A member of the
