Joyner, a consistent Dean’s List
student; is a member of ODK, the
honorary society for service, aca
demic excellence and leadership.
Joyner lettered in basketball and
softball at Wesleyan. A senior,
she is completing her degree for
teacher certification.
Michael Scott Byrum, a junior
from Tarboro, received the Biol
ogy Award. He is married to
Bobby Byrum of Tarboro. The
award is based on superior aca
demic ability, enthusiasm, and
the ability to maintain independ
ent concepts in biology. Byrum
works in the biology lab at
Wesleyan and also tutors biology
students.
Mark Peterson of Rocky
Mount was the recipient of the
Best Student in Freshman Chem
istry Award, sponsored by the
Chemical Ruber Company. The
award is based on attitude,
knowledge of the subject, ability
to help others, cooperation and
the achievement of the highest
grade in lab and lecture com
bined. He is married to Alison
Peterson, also a Wesleyan stu
dent and award winner.
The Chemistry Award was
presented by the physical science
department to Carl Anderson, a
senior chemistry major with ex
cellent grades and promising aca
demic performance. Anderson
also received the American Insti
tute of Chemists/North Carolina
Institute of Chemists Foundation '
Award. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Carl M. Anderson of Brick-
town, N.J.
The Mathematics Award was
presented to Walter Ray Moore,
son of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Moore
of Rocky Mount. The Wesleyan
junior was chosen by the depart
ment because he is “a most con
scientious mathematics major
who wishes to pursue his studies
further and a Dean’s List student
who manages both his part-time
work and academic load well.”

Donald Wayne Martin. The
award is sponsored by The Colo
nial Dames and chosen by the
history department. Martin of
Raleigh is a senior history major.
His paper was judged as the best
paper submitted by any history
student this year.
Tonia Grooms, daughter of
Mrs. Patricia A. Grooms of
Rocky Mount, received the Poli
tics Award. Grooms is a senior
with a 4.0 GPA in politics and
served as an Ambassador for the
College. She conducted a major
research project on the N.C. pri
mary run-off system.
Senior Dick Bowen of
Jamesville and Phillip Cook of
Tarboro received the Psychology
Department Award. Bowen
holds a 3.92 overall GPA and a
4.0 in his major of psychology.
He is a member of Psi Chi, the
psychology honor society. Cook
has a 3.83 overall GPA and a 4.0
in psychology. He is also a mem
ber of Psi Chi and has completed
internships at Tri County Indus
tries and Edgecombe Community
College.
Bowen is married to Judy
Bowen of Jamesville. Cook is the
son of Mrs. Phyllis Wilson of
Tarboro.
Junior Sharon P. Evans re
ceived the Cooperative Educa
tion Award for parallel sessions.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Wilfred F. Evans of Nash
ville. Evans co-oped at Pioneer
Savings Bank, where she edited
the in-house newsletter. She as
sisted the cooperative education
office by writing articles for its
newsletters as well in the recruit
ment of other students to the pro
gram.
Roger E. Clemons of Raleigh
received the Alternating Coop
erative Education Award. The
award is based on GPA, the com
pletion of the learning contract
devised by faculty representative
and the co-op employer, and the
standard of the student’s paper on
the co-op experience. Clemons, a
student on Ae Raleigh campus,
was chosen by the cooperative

education department for his en
thusiasm and dedication to the
program.
The Student Life Organiza
tion Award went to the Student
Government Association. This
group was recognized for its con
tributions to all aspects of cam
pus life this year.
The Association implemented
a funding process for student or
ganizations and was involved in
the revival of the college year
book and in the conversion proc
ess of campus fraternities and
sororities to nationally-affiliated
organizations. The SGA also pur
chased computers for the student
residence halls. The award was
accepted by Amy Seate, presi
dent.
Crystal Taylor, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel TaylOT of
Castalia, was awarded the Sarah
Alexander Tullos Award. This
award is given to a student who
has demonstrated a high degree
of competency in many ares and
whose energy has contributed to
a number of important elements
in student life. Sarah Alexander
Tullos was the Dean of Student at
Wesleyan in the early 1970s. The
College has elected to continue
this award as a tribute to her
memory.
Taylor has served as secretary
for the student government and a
Spotlight leader during orienta
tion. She was recently elected
vice president of the SGA for
1990-91. She is a junior at
Wesleyan.
Matt Dyson, son of Mrs.
Dorothy Peterman of Wilkes-
boro, received the James R.
Hailey Leadership and Service
Award. The award is given to a
student whose personality, spirit
and participation in campus ac
tivities has helped significantly to
maintain and improve the quality
of student life. Dr. James R.
Hailey served as professor of reli
gion and college chaplain at
Wesleyan firom 1961-1975.
Dyson, a sophomore, has
served as Greek Council presi
dent and was instrumental in
bringing national Greek organi
zations to Wesleyan. He is a
member of the Wesleyan Sing
ers, a resident assistant, and the
newly-elected SGA president.
Dyson will be sponsored to at
tend a Wesleyan event this sum
mer as a Spotlight leader.
The theatre department pre
sented awards to Alison Peter
son, Todd Waters, and Alan Fel
ton. Peterson is married to Mark
Peterson, also a Wesleyan stu
dent. Waters is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert L. Waters of
Richmond, Va. Felton, a sopho
more religion and English major
living in Pinetops, is the son of
the Rev. Dr. Gayle C. Felton of
Durham and A.L. Felton of
Wilson.
These recipients were chosen
because they demonstrate artistic
ability in theatre, are artistically
flexible, maintain good academic
standing, have participated in at
least one production during the
year, and have shown a willing
ness to go beyond the call of duty.
They were chosen because they
“represent growing student inter
est in the College theatre and the
higher level of quality of the per
formances this year.”
Melissa Joplin, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Joplin of
Nashville, was chosen to receive
the WC Reid Band Award. The
award was chosen by the music
department on the basis of relia
bility and dependability in con
tributing to the Wesleyan Wind
Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble,
willingness to put forth effort
required to become a better in
strumental musician in the Col
lege setting, talent and musical
ability.
