PAGE 4 — THE DECREE — SEPTEMBER 21,1990 Soccer team hoping for great season By MIKE WALSH Wesleyan men’s soccer pro gram is looking forward this year to a great season. Last season Wesleyan went 12- 8 before being ousted in the Dixie (Continued from Front Page) the number of new students com ing for the school year, there were many steps taken for the college to function more effectively. The Dean of Student Life, Pam Derrick, said these steps included longer and more accommodating Baseball tryouts start Interest is high for the 1990 fall baseball season as fall tryouts have begun for Mike Fox’s Battling Bishops. Fox has been busy evaluating all the newcomers, and feels con fident about the team’s prospects. The Battling Bishops baseball team will play a total of 18 games this fall against Division LII, HI, and junior college teams. Conference Tournament. This year’s squad is made up of some excellent returning players and some promising freshmen. David Durkac, a senior out of Neptune, N.J., and senior Jon Miller, of Tampa, Fla., are ex hours in the student health clinic, increased security, and aU organi zations becoming more involved in campus life. Academically, there were changes made by add ing more sections of lower level classes. Academic Dean Marshall Brooks said officials found them selves “pleasant surprised when the need for more class sections and LSS class instructors arose.” Even with the addition of classes, some students found them selves not receiving their first choice of classes. Freshman Jeff Schofield com mented, “All the classes I wanted to get out of the way, like math and religion, are going to have to wait until next semester.” But Dean Brooks assured stu- pected to give the Bishops the leadership needed on the field. Other returnees like Mike Bauer and Craig Benson will sta bilize the backfield. Troy Smitson and John Bluffstone will be a central part of the midfield and are dents that if a student didn’t get his first choice, he ended up with a “reasonable schedule” to help meet academic requirements. Unfortunately, there were dis advantages. Many upperclassmen who signed up for a single room in the residence halls were asked to consolidate because of a lack of space. There was a long line to register at the beginning of the semester, but there still is a longer line in the cafeteria. Many freshmen feel they won’t get to know the people in their class since they are all spread out through the four dorms. Having a huge incoming class might bring short-term problems, but in the end the college will see long term benefits, officials be lieve. expected to control and distribute the ball during Wesleyan’s offen sive attack. Goalkeeper Bobby Betts is the only returning goalkeeper for the Bishops and will definitely have a busy season. Overall, the uperclassmen, particularly those in the backfield, will be used to give the Bishops direction and help the new players in pressure situations. In the first couple of games the The Women’s volleyball team opened up their season with a 2-3 game loss to Meredith College. The Lady Bishops played to their potential in the second and third game, but Meredith came back to win the fourth and final games. First year coach and Wesleyan alumna, Lori Blackburn, said that the team can learn fi:om the games and work on their problems in order to win upcoming matches. Coach Blackburn played on the Women’s volleyball team when she attended Wesleyan. Bishops were having trouble pull ing together, but the last game against Elon College showed the Bishops playing well with only a few mistakes to win 1-0. The team’s current record is 3-2 as of Sept. 11. Remaining games included against Mary Washington College on Sept. 15, Greensboro College on Sept. 29, Christopher-Newport College on Oct. 9, Ferrum Col lege on Oct. 17, and UNC- Wilmington on Oct. 27. One of the advantages this team possesses is the number of return ees. Where most of the other teams consist of freshmen, this year’s team has five women who have played together for the past sea son. The volleyball team return ees are: Loren Segura, senior; Karin Leshet junior; Judy Boyd, Eric Brown, and Lori Stevens, sophomores. The new players include sopho mores J.C. Fairall and Kristen Grove, and freshmen Wendie Kennedy, Desiree Harmon, and Tina Vel.
