Bishops battling hard
in soccer competition

many students
extra resources

Dr. Morrison agrees and ex
plains, ‘The response of the tu
tors has been overwhelmingly
wonderful.”
The LRC is overall doing a
good job, say tutored students.
One student said, ‘The LRC is
very helpful because sometimes
if you get a student to explain
something to another student, the
material is more readily compre
hended because the tutor is on
the same level or wavelength as
the student.”
Another student expressed her
feeUng that “the LRC does not
just help the students but also the
teachers. The teachers are on a
schedule and they have to teach a
certain amount of course work
before the end of the semester. It
would be possible to keep a whole
class behind if one student could
not grasp certain material or a
particular lesson. But, because of
the LRC, the student can get help
from a tutor and actually help
himself, the professor, and the
whole class.”
One problem which arises is
that of getting the students to take
advantage of this service. Dhana
Chesson, an English tutor, says,
“There are many students who
need help, but not all will come
and take advantage of the LRC.”
Dr. Morrison adds, “There is a
stigmatic notion about the LRC.”
She stresses that the LRC is not a
place for students who are doing
poorly but a place where one may
receive “intellectual satisfaction.”
Students in need of help with
their studies should check the tu
tor list or block chart posted out
side the LRC for times in which
tutors and subjects are available.
Students may make an appoint
ment for tutoring by signing up
on the appointment sheets out
side the LRC or by calling exten
sion 210.
Workshops are also offered
throughout the year to help stu
dents with all kinds of classroom
problems. Some of these work
shops include: Study Skills, Time
Management, and Taking Essay
Exams. These and other work
shops are offered more than once
to enable each student to take
advantage of this information.

Over the past two weeks, the
Bishops men’s soccer team has
had a challenging schedule, de
feating Averett 2-1, losing to
Duke 6-1, and playing a confer
ence battle to a 0-0 tie against
Greensboro College this past
weekend.
Greensboro, ranked 10th in the
nation, were given a real show by
the Battling Bishops. Without
stopper Mike Bavier, out with a
knee injury, the Bishops defense
had to really pull together, which
they did. Bobby Betts, the
Bishop’s starting goalkeeper,
turned in an excellent game to
shut out the opposition.
Defensively overall, the Bish
ops had a very strong game. Sen
ior defenders Craig Benson and
David Durkac, along with fresh
men Jason Helmliger and Sean
Driscoll provided the solid de
fense. Helmliger, Driscoll, and
freshman Don Clements stepped
in and played well in the high
pressured game.
Coach Bigney said that over
all the Bishops gave a good de
fensive effort and that he could
see the intensity and desire in all
the players.
In offense, junior Troy
Smitson held the Bishops together
in the midfield, while sophomore
midfielder Chung Vu had a
couple of good scoring chances
during the game. One in which
he hit the crossbar had looked to
be a sure goal. Both teams had
excellent scoring opportunities,
but simply could not capitalize
on them.
Overall, the Bishops have
come a long way and have begun
to play more as a team than indi
viduals. Coach Bigney attributes
this to the intense play against
opposition such as Duke and
Carolina. He feels these are good
learning experiences and are help
ing the Bishops improve.
Bigney was confident going
into Wednesday’s game against
rival Methodist College. He feels
if the team can put to use what
they have learned already and
have the intensity of last
Saturday’s game, they not only
have a good chance of winning
against Methodist but winning the
conference title as well.
