PAGE 4 — THE DECREE — JANUARY 24,1992 Baker selected ‘coach of year’ The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recently announced that North Carolina Wesleyan Women’s Soccer Coach Patrick Baker has been se lected as the 1991 Division in South Regional Coach of the Year. (Continued from Front Page) In spite of this ratio, many would still like to see the WPE come to an end. Many students complain that it is not needed because passing English 111 and 112 should prove that a person is a proficient writer. This reasoning, supporters of the test counter, does not include transfer students, returning stu dents who might have become . WESQ hopes to broadcast by February (Continued from Front Page) we will probably have jazz.” It is at night when student help would come into play. If the sta tion does rebroadcast another station during the day, once the sun goes down, student program ming would take over. The stu dent disk jockies would be able to select Ae jazz music played, within certain limitations and guidelines. There is an enormous amount of rules concerning what is ap propriate on the air. “The FCC is very strict about non-profit radio stations,” McDowell said, “and what they can and caimot do.” WESQ still needs student participation. Those interested should consider the new “Intro duction to Broadcasting” course now being offered. This course presents students with the oppor tunity to learn about every aspect of r^o and broadcasting, from how to run a station to FCC regulations, to talking on the air. “Have patience,” McDowell tells Wesleyan students and fac ulty. “It will be on the air.” By a vote of his fellow coaches. Baker received this prestigious award for the first time since taking over the helm three years ago. “I feel very honored to have been selected for this award,” said coach Baker. “I owe the ladies on rusty in their skills, students who speak EngUsh as a second lan guage, or the fact that some ma jors are not writing-intensive and students may forget some of what they learned in English 111 and 112. This leaves Wesleyan needing a way to ensure that all those re ceiving a degree from Wesleyan receive some of value, which will not be the case if students gradu ate who cannot write even a simple essay. Itiere are problems with the WPE. Last semester, 16 students appealed the requirement based on the fact that they found out there had been problems with the way the test had been graded. Some tests were read twice by the same reader, and some had only been read once. Dr. Rick Watson said that “given some reform, the WPE is a good way to ensure that students can write successfully.” Dr. Anderson said “a test like this is essential.” For now, the WPE remains a requirement for students to graduate. As Wesleyan moves towards higher academic stan dards, it is unlikely the test will be removed without something else put in its place. With Dr. Anderson no longer overseeing the WPE, its future remains more in question than ever. my team a lot for this, for it was their accomplishments on the field that made this award even possible. “I’m still amazed about what our team accomplished last year, especially since we started seven freshmen and three sophomores,” said coach Baker. “We started off 1991 to a tremendous 10-1 mark and then won a couple of key games down the stretch that as sured ourselves of an NCAA Tournament bid. They all worked extremely hard and deserve the recognition for their efforts.” In closing the interview, Baker added, “I try very hard to recruit quality student-athletes that will represent the college and my soc cer program in a first class fash ion. We have a close knit group that will do anything for one an other. I also want to thank N.C. Wesleyan for giving me the chance to prove myself as a young coach. As regional coach of the year. Baker competed for Division HI National Coach of the Year, an nounced earlier this month at the NSCAA Convention in Pitts burgh, Pa. Garner to head area Chamber For the first time in its 87 years of operation, the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce has an educator at its helm. Dr. Leslie H. Visiting poet James Applewhite of Duke University, author of six highly acclaimed books of poetry, read from his works on campus Thursday evening as part of the Visiting Writers Series. Authorities investigating two break-ins (Continued from Front Page) Pittman added, “If students see anything suspicious, they should call security” and security will respond immediately. Several students have also suggested that the college pur chase an alarm system to make the campus more secure. “We would like to have an alarm system, but we have to take things one at a time,” Pittman said. She said she feels the college is showing commitment to in creased campus security, but adds, “The commitment can only go as far as the money can go.” Alarm systems can run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, she said. The campus break-ins are still under investigation by the Rock Mount police detectives. Anyone with any information that may assist the investigation is asked to call Deborah Pittman at ext. 5226.
