PAGE 4 — THE DECREE — APRIL 10,1992 Students enjoyed singing By DELINDA LEE Recovering from gall bladder surgery not more than a week ago, Jane Powell and Company still managed to wow the Wesleyan community in their Spring Fling debut. Sponsored by Pi Epsilon and the Campus Activities Board, Powell and Company came to Rocky Mount on April 1 and gave a memorable performance. The multi-purpose room in the Stu dent Activity Center took on a nightclub atmosphere as candles slowly burned on covered round tables and refreshments were served, adding the perfect touch to what was to be a perfect even ing. Powell’s talent as both a singer and entertainer came shining through when she performed such numbCTS as “Unforgettable,” “Get Here If You Can,” “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You,” “Respect,” and other selected songs she had written herself. Her sweet, sensuous voice and her added “scooby do’s” and wide range of octaves gave each song a posonal, unique touch. The highlight of the evening came when Powell announced that her next number would re- quire audience particq)ation. Af ter selecting stud^ts Hm ElmcMre, Bobby Betts, Andre Clanton, and Daryl Whitakw, she proceeded to adorn die three witb lovely new “locks.” Powell then l»:dce out singing “Under the Boardwallf with her new back-up singers. But diat was not all. Music major BJ. Robinson also played along cm his alto saxoptKMie. Much to the delight of the audience, Robinstm was asked to play anodi»'numb^ with the band and proceeded b> jam alcxig in a jazz improvisation. Back-up singer Elmore ex claimed, “It was cool being able to help with the audience partici pation. She is a great person.” “It was an excellent show that brought Wesleyan students to their feet,” said freshman Matt SnydCT. At the end of the night people were up on tiieir feet dancing to “One Buck Wine” and having a peat time. All woe sorry to see die cad d die successful perfor- ■saoe and said 1k^ to see 'Vamdt and Cam^fmy letum to IftjItjMsowcliMeiattefitee. ^'-1 Thorp in last semester AWARD WINNER — Senior Benny St Romain accepts the Physical Education Award at the 1992 Honors convocation. Can you imagine that? Yes, a lot has sure changed since I’ve been teaching,” she said. What does she want her stu dents to know most of all? “Don’t ask me that,” she laughed, then her face became serious and she thought for a second. “No, I do want you to ask me that. I think it would be this: art will trip to manipulate you just like people will. So you always have to keep your crud detector on,” she said. “Also I think a passage from the Bible says what I would love for all my students to have. ITus is the innocence of a dove and the wisdom of the serpent” As students pre-register, there will be those who take Art 101 next fall. Wesleyan will have a new teacher who will be able to enlighten students about the world of art. But just as wine, art, and love become more valuable with age and cannot be easily replaced if lost, so it will be with Daisy Thorp.
