Sigma Pi has good year
By JOHN FENTRESS
The 1991-92 academic school
year is about to close, and it has
been an excellent year from
Sigma Pi’s perspective. From
fundraisers to sponsored events,
from parties to special events.
Sigma Pi has done it all.
The year really kicked off on
I.abor Day with Sigma Pi’s First
Annual Pig Pickin’. It was a huge
success and enjoyed by all who
attended. The head chefs were
Robert “Cuz” Baker and Keith
“Boot” Cockrell.
September was also a month
of fundraisers and get-togethers.
Sigma Pi held a car wash to raise
money for its national philan
thropy, Multiple Sclerosis. Many
brothers and little sisters partici
pated. At the end of the month,
some brothers went to Elon Col
lege for Sigma Pi weekend. This
weekend was fiill of activities and
it gave the Wesleyan chapter the
opportunity to meet brothers fiom
other colleges.
The NCWC Clean Sweep was
also held in September. Sigma Pi
participated and came away with
the most participation within an
organization.
During September and Octo
ber, outside parties were the
things to attend on the weekends.
This was largely due to the fact
that Brother Steven “Ogre”
Corbitt let the Wesleyan campers
ventiue to Nashville and use his
house and deck. Also held at
Ogre’s house was the 1992 Little
Sister Initiation of Kelly Best,
Carol Gay, Trina Becker, Kim
Norman, Kim Chahoc, Christy
Wood, and Dana Morgan. Christy
Peoples was the 1991-92 Sigma
Pi Sweetheart
Moving into October, enter
tainment was the issue at hand
with the annual Sigma Pi Lip
Sync Contest Coming back from
last year’s third place finish were
the “Love Me Just For Me” guys,
Roddy “Ribeye” Gyorke and John
“M&M” Fentress. This year
M&M went solo and came out
with a second place finish by
passing out roses to the ladies and
asking them the question, “Are
You Still In Love With Me?”
Ribeye teamed up with brother
Ronnie “Combread” Rogers and
good friend Benny St Romain
and brought home the first place
finish by telling all the ladies that
they “Can’t Wait Another
from Wilson back to the Wes
leyan campus. All were extremely
tired, but knowing it was for a
good cause made it worthwhile.
As November moved in, so did
the notorious Bleacher Creatures.
The Wesleyan crazies were back
at it again, supporting the
women’s and men’s basketball
teams. Those who haven’t seen
the Bleacher Creature pyramid are
missing out.
As winter set in, so did the
campus at Brian “Wall Street”
Patterson, Greg “Bullwinkle”
Brandli, and Keith “Boot”
Cockrell’s house. Parties of all
kinds were in order at the “Sigma
Pi Fraternity House.”
As the spring semester rolled
in. Sigma Pi sponsored comedian
Grant Turner and held raffles, one
in which Wake Forest basketball
tickets were given away. Sigma
Pi also worked with their advi
sor, Dr. Kiik Oldham, and spon
sored ch£q>el services as well as
contributed to the Habitat for
Humanity project.
The school year was busy for
Sigma Pi, but the brothers didn’t
slack off just because the end was
near. In April, Sigma Pi partici
pated in a school phon-a-thon in
an attempt to raise money for the
college.
During Spring Fling, Sigma Pi
sponsored Bingo in Doc’s. It was
a bigger success than anticipated
and would not have been pos
sible without the letter/number
calling of Craig “Purdy” Allen.
Two days later. Sigma Pi
sponsored the watching in Doc’s
of the NCAA Basketball Cham
pionship Game between the Duke
Blue Devils and the Michigan
Wolverines. A crowd was on hand
to see the Devils take it to the
“Fab Five” and win their second
consecutive national champion
ship.
The middle of the month gave
Sigma Pi what the brothers an
ticipate all year long. The Sixth
Annual Orchid Ball at the
Carleton House was a huge suc
cess. The whole weekend was a
blast, led off by the Sigma Pi New
Brother Initiation. Following the
initiation, a party at the “Sigma
Pi Fraternity House” really be
gan heating things up.
Saturday began with a cook-
out for alumni, actives, and little
sisters. Following the feast was a
softball game between the actives
and the alumni. The alumni got
revenge from last year’s loss by
beating the actives, 20-17.
After the game, everyone got
ready for the big night. The
brothers in tuxedoes picked up
their dates and headed to the
Carleton House. There they were
entertained by an array of
speeches by brothers such as Sage
David “Big Dave” Brooks, Ellis
“The Emperor” McGee, and
alumnus John “Cy” Moriarity.
After the words of wisdom,
everyone enjoyed a full-course
meal and then danced the night
away. After the Orchid Ball, ev
eryone went to various places and
partied until the sun came up.
The final projecl/fundraiser of
the year was a putt-putt tourna
ment on April 22.
Sigma Pi has a group of great
brothers and little sisters, and
during this school year accom
plished many things. We hope to
continue to serve each other, the
Wesleyan campus, and the Rocky
Mount community — and by so
doing to become better and
stronger than we already are.
