But only a few weeks ago, Linda Calhoun in the admissions By DELINDA LEE It is not even spring and the Wesleyan girl’s softball team is hard at work preparing for their upcoming season. Starting practice Sept. 7, the team is continuing to strive for perfection on the field Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Recovering firom the sum mer, the girls are getting back into shape quickly with extensive con ditioning, batting practice, and infield/outfield training. With only six out of last year’s 10 players returning, pitcher Car rie Shank commented, “We are still a young team, but we are growing very fast.” Although the official softball season does not start until spring, the Bishops are participating in “Fall Ball.” Coach John Brackett feels that participation in “Fall Ball” is important because it al lows the coaches a chance to office was chosen to be the new coach. When asked what she expected from the squad this year, she said, “I expect the squad to be dedi cated to their involvement in which they can build a founda tion that everyone will look up to. And most of all to have fun.” evaluate the players and their po tential. The team is scheduled to play several scrimmages against such schools as Louisburg, Campbell, St. Andrews, as well as possibly an alumni game. Since the team is just getting off to a fresh, pre-season start. Calhoun does not know if there will be any tryouts this year due to a rocky organization. But if tiyouts are to be held, then there will be representatives from Barton College, a local high school coach, and someone from the squad in the past to be the judges. Depending on how things go, Calhoun might just take anyone who is interested. On Sept. 16, a lot of people attended an interest meeting. The team won’t be traveling to away games but will attend all of the home games. Calhoun is not sure if the squad will be in any competitions this year. Michelle Owens is the only returning student and will be the captain for the squad this year. Calhoun said she chose Owens “because she knows what the sys tem is like, what was good about it, and what went wrong.” Above all, Calhoun said, “I don’t want this year to be stress ful and I want everyone to have a lot of fun. The squad is the spirit of the school, and if they’re stressed out, it won’t be a good year.” Brackett said, “We have our work cut out for us.” Many members of the team are optimistic. Feeling that the team is showing a lot of promise and talent early on. Shank summed things up by saying, “We are looking forward to a winning sea son.” By DELINDA LEE Starting the season off slowly by losing to Barton College, and now sporting a record of 3-7, Wesleyan’s girl’s voUeyball team is working hard, determined to improve. Practicing five days a week, Monday through Friday from 7-9 p.m., except on game days, the girls are kept in shape by Coach Charlie Long by having them lift weights every other practice, do a lot of running, and engage in passing, setting, and hitting drills. But this season has not been all disappointments for the Lady Bishops. Participating in a tour nament at Randolph Macon ear lier this season, Wesleyan trium phantly took third place. This was a significant accomplishment con sidering the team failed to place during last year’s tournament. This year’s team has only four returning players. Serving as Cap tain is senior Candi Evans. Other members of the 1992 team are Glynis Cureton, Diana Friedrich, Lisa Hollowbush, Melissa Jefferies, Lisa Lambert, Marie Lenane, Coleen McMahn, Fran Palker, Jennifer Parrish, and Lelia Watson. The season is not even half over and the Bishops have a high determination to improve their current standing. The team en courages everyone to come out and watch their upcoming games, and cheer them on to victory. 1992 Men's Soccer schedule Oct. 3 Coker 1:30 p.m. Hartsville, S.C.
