DECEMBER 10,1993 — THE DECREE — PAGE 3 Mixture of facts and opinions gives chance to blow off steam Top ten reasons vice presidents and staff leave Wesleyan College 10. Peer pressure 9. Better shoe contracts at other schools 8. Want the school to study staff/V.P. retention rather than student retention 7. Suffer from severe conditions of loneliness 6. They left to join the Crusades 5. Realization that other famous vice presidents in clude Walter Mondale, Dan Quayle, A1 Gore, and Spiro Agnew 4. The students leave so why can’t we? 3. Hated the Top Ten List 2. It’s no longer safe to eat at Hardees 1. “Why Ask Why?” — Patrick Brannan McDowell pulls plug (Continued from Front Page) McDowell noted that if a fine ’ was applied, it would be paid by V the student who broke the regu lations, and he said he stopped ^ the broadcast in order to protect ‘ both the college and the student. X WESQ station manager Jerry Glass verified that the operator on duty would be held account- ' able in addition to the college’s »liability. ^ Decker said that “anything that tries to shut down the radio hurts ’ the station and the public.” He ’Information glut overloads brain (Continued from Page 2) You’ve got yours, too; what- *ever your particular interest, ‘there’s at least a magazine aimed ,at you. As I say, maybe you don’t have my angst about missing out on some piece of newly discov- "ered intelligence that will make 'my vision of the subject suddenly -crystal clear. I, however, am ad dicted. So what’s the answer? Do we "ignore it all, settle for bits and 'pieces whenever we run into vthem, or stack them up until we ^get to them? I mean, how much information can the brain assimi- ' late? When do we get a break? ' It’s like the highway system; is it ever going to be finished? Is there never a time when we aren’t go ing to be slowed up by improve- ’ ments? So I wish that for a month ' nothing new would happen while ^I catch up on what’s already hap pened, happening, or threatening to happen. said he did not know what prompted the response but added that he gets calls from through out North Carolina and that his show is an “outlet for the punk community.” Dr. Richard Watson, chairman of the Faculty Council, said he had no specific information about the matter nor knowledge of FCC regulations, but said in general he opposes censorship and rejects the idea that outside members of the community should have in fluence over the station’s pro gramming. He added that the college stands for fi"eedom of expression and that WESQ is a “part of the college’s educational mission.” The unidentified community member is expected Friday to bring a tape of the allegedly of fensive material to WESQ for re view by the college and any q>- propriate action. Although Glass was not con tacted before the station was shut down, he said there is no specific policy relating to such a process. By PATRICK BRANNAN There is a sports columnist in Baltimore that every now and then writes a column containing a list of facts and opinions. I thought that since there are a number of things that I want to get off my chest I would use this format for my column. Here goes! Fact: An Italian hockey player is being tried for manslaughter in the death of another player dur ing a game on Jan. 14,1992. Opinion: Television is ruin ing the sports business, especially CBS by over-paying for the rights to sporting events. Fact: The ACC is the domi nant force in the NCAA basket ball tournament The ACC mem bers are 54-20 in the NCAA tour nament during the ‘90s. Also three of the last five, and five of the last 12 national championship teams are from the ACC. Opinion: Baltimore had the best financial package to offer the NFL for expansion. Now if Balti more really wants to slap the NFL in the face they will look into the offer of having a Canadian Foot ball team come to town. Fact: The NFL’s move to speed up the game by lowering the play clock to 40 seconds has resulted in fewer touchdowns than any season in the past decade. Opinion: While the NBA at tracts the younger fans, baseball and football attempt to keep their older fans interested. Fact: When CBS paid base ball the highest sum for the right to televise a sport, they doubled the amount of money each team received from national television revenues. Opinion: There is a good chance that there may be no base ball in 1994. The l^r negoda- Opinion tions are non-existent and the owners’ negotiator is talking about quitting because the own ers can’t agree on a revenue shar ing plan. The new television con tract has to include the realign ment of the divisions and the ex panded playoffs which the play ers have not yet approved. The owners have not yet appointed a commissioner which Siey prom ised Congress they would do by Christmas. Baseball fans, let’s just hope that once spring training starts then the on-field action will over shadow the off-field troubles. Fact: Our tax money was spent in the form of a $107,000 study of the sex life of the Japa nese quail. Opinion: What if the Presi dent of the U.S. was able to dis solve Congress whenever they blocked legislation? What kind of government would the U.S. have if this could happen? Would it be better or worse? Fact: The government spent S84,0(X) to study why people faU in love. Opinion: People like to blame the government for the problems in America but who has the right to vote? Before you blame some one else look at yourself first. Fact: $19 million was spent to study gas emissions fi"om cow flatulence. Opinion: Why does our gov ernment waste money while fed eral aid to college students has declined while college costs have risen? Fact: $219,0(X) was spent to teach college students how to watch television. Opinion: Why do the commercials for the “X Files” say “Don’t watch it alone?” Also, anyone interested in a TV tip, “Picket Fences” is a great show and really tackles some of the big issues in American society. The show airs 10 p.m. Friday night Fact: The Congress approved $100,(XX) to study how to avoid a falling spacecraft. Opinion: Actually, that might be a useful study with the way NASA cares for their spacecraft Fact: A $10,(X)0 study was done on the effect of naval communications on a bull’s po tency. Opinion: Does this study have anything to so with the lifting of the ban of women on combat ships? Fact: A death row inmate in Maryland has asked to videotape and study the execution of an other inmate to prove that execu tion by gas is cruel and imusual punishment Opinion: Is it just me or do more criminals that are paroled commit crimes again, even more violent ones at times? What’s the deal with the sentence “life with out parole”? Wouldn’t it just be che^er to kill the person? Fact: A mugger who was shot by a New York City transit cq) was awarded $4.3 million this past week Opinion: How can our police and other public safety forces do their job when they can’t even use force to apprehend a subject? The information in this col umn was acquired from my read ing of various sources includii^ USA Today, Sports Illustrated, and the Ix^k The Governmemt Racket by Martin L.
