Dunn, Jr., and Ineze Dunn Auditorium will bring a new dimension of culture to a large area,” he added, “ And all of our citizens will share in the pride we feel today for the Dunn family and the people of Guard ian Corporation.” On hand for the announcement were three nephews of the Dunns and their families who hve in Rocky Mount: Melvyn W. Elks, Joseph C. Dunn, and Leon A. Dunn Jr., who is a trustee of the college. Bom in Pamlico County, Dunn entered the world of business at the age of 15 when he opened a hotdog stand. He grew up in Ayden, and after serving in World War n, he settled down in Nor folk, Va, investing in Terminal Cars, Inc., a local taxi company that grew to be among the area’s largest. Mrs. Dunn, also from Ayden, was very involved in the couple’s business ventures. Dunn and business partner Robert F. Anglin formed the first ambulance service in Norfolk — City Ambulance Service — in 1949, which Mrs. Dunn presided over and managed for 20 years. They also formed A-D Surgical Supply Inc., of Norfolk, and rented all types of hospital equipment, including wheelchairs and beds, to hospi tals and homes. Dunn was also instrumental in forming numer ous businesses in the Norfolk area that were in real estate and ar mored transportation services. It was through his heavy in volvement in the health care industry that Dunn began to see a definite need for skilled conva lescent care. His primary interest became the Guardian Corpora tion, a diversified company head quartered in Rocky Mount, which owned and operated nursing homes, campgrounds, and a land development company. Guardian’s first nursing home opened on Jan. 20, 1962, in the old Atlantic Coast Line Hospital in Rocky Mount. Before it was sold in the early 1980s, the company’s Guardian Care divi sion grew to 25 facilities with a capacity of more than 2,400 beds and 2,(XX) employees. It was the largest nursing home company in North Carolina at that time. Guardian now owns and operates 31 Hardee’s restaurants in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylva nia. After 31 years and several more dollars than his original $3,000 at stake, Dunn retired as chairman of the board of his larg est and most successful venture. Guardian Corporation, in 1976 to his home on Lake Gaston near Littleton, and sold his interest in Guardian Corporation in 1981. He and Mrs. Dunn were married for almost 55 years.
