PAGE 2 — THE DECREE — SEPTEMBER 9,1994 Library shows selection of wooden art After retiring from his work at a sawmill, Halifax County native Leroy Person (1907-1985) began carving and painting the door and window surrounds of his small house, building furniture, and whittiing small sculptures repre senting peafowl, fish, snakes, and mysterious human figures, deco rated with shallow, all-over inci sions colored with wax crayons. A selection of his hand-carved and painted base relief wood pieces are currently on display in the Pearsall Library in an exhibit that runs until Oct. 29. “All the wooden objects have shallow overall carving and cross- hatching, a frequent characteris tic of African art, as in the use of brightly-applied colors,” explains Roger Manley in his book. Signs and Wonders. Person often at tributed his inspiration to televi sion images, and his frequent pea fowl were probably inspired by the brilliant unfolding logo of NBC.” Enormously prolific. Person worked constantly, even taking up drawing while convalescing in the hospital from one of his frequent bouts with asthma. Over 200 examples of his work are held in the Lynch Collection of Out sider Art at Wesleyan. “What impresses me most about Person’s various carved objects is how he concentrated on subdividing the surface area with progressively descending in cised patterning,” said Everett M. Adelman, curator of Wesleyan’s outsider art collection and asso ciate professor of art. $43,000 given for scholarships The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, Inc., has given $43,000 to North Carolina Wes leyan College to be used for schol arships for the 1994-95 academic year. The Foundation’s annual grants to Wesleyan have grown considerably — the first, received in 1982, totaled $5,000. Based in Atlanta, Ga., the Foundation makes annual grants to North Carohna, South Caro lina, Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida. These grants fund scholarships for the education of women. In accordance with the guide lines prescribed by the founder, the guarantee institutions award scholarships on the basis of need to Christian women who reside in one of the nine southern states. Paintings and sculptures often talk when histories are dumb. These unknown artists tell what dreams or fears were real to them, and how they feel about them. This collection of Outsider Art expresses native qualities of origi nality, inventiveness, and in dependence. It uncovers the roots of Eastern North Carolinians, exposing a chapter in the social history of the region.
