^ecree VOL. 11, NO. 3 North Carolina Wesleyan College, Rocky Mount, N.C. FRTOAY, OCTOBER 20,1995 don’fcreflect attendance By JESSICA COHOON As of Sept. 5, the number of freshmen anending N.C. Wesleyan is only 147 out of 900 students who applied this fall and 758' who were ac cepted. In order for a student to be considered at Wesleyan, the Student must tneet certain re- qujrenieats with the SAT and high school GPA. A 5-iudent is accepted at N.C. Vv es>leyan by jnoeeting these requirements and the decision has nothing to do with financial aid Unfortunately, out cf the 758 only 164 students chose .to eotehd this M. The real rea sons for people not at’ -nding Wesleyan can be several things^ from going to another ' school or not going to school, at all. Some students’ GPAs and their SATs were too low ', for-tii»em tCi even be consid ered at Wesleyan, but ;idniis- 1000 800- 600- 400- 200 - Applied Accepted Attended siojis gav6 aiem a chance. The students reived letters asking them to retake the SAT to try to get a higher score. Some students actually tried, but many did not. V, Aetaally, acceptances were. higher, but the number of Stu dents attending is lower. Tlie problem is not the school’s re quirements, but the students’ failure to try, some officials said. Corbin to leave Wesleyan By JESSICA COHOON Dr. Hugh Coibin in the Edu cation Department will be leav ing N.C. Wesleyan College at the end of the year. Dr. Corbin has been at Wesleyan for 7-1/2 years. He said his job here at Wesleyan has been to “teach people how to teach.” He added that he has had “many good times and achievements at Wesleyan.” In June of 1996 Dr. Corbin plans to move to Barbados where he and his wife have built a house. He also says that he would be “happy to stay for more years, but he needs to continue his life with his wife in Barbados.” Is Wesleyan going to replace Dr. Corbin? Dean Bussom said that as of right now. Dr. Coibin’s position has not been replaced. It is too soon to deal with new fac ulty positions for 1996-97 aca demic year, school officials ex plained. Dr. Corbin received many good comments from students like, “He cares a lot about his students and he respects your opinions.” SGA passes tight budget after debate By MARCY STOVER The Student Government As sociation meeting on Oct. 2 cov ered many important issues, in cluding the election of new sena tors, the budget for the fall 1995 semester, and a request to amend the SGA constitution. Three new senators were voted on and sworn in. The nominees for the two vacant Senator-at- Large positions were John Bracken, Amie Chancholo, Grant Long, and Christian Skinner, After speeches were given by the nominees. Grant Long and Christian Skinner were elected by SGA. A new Commuter Repre sentative was also chosen. Fresh man Kenra Bryan was elected unanimously by the SGA for this position. Andre Clanton, Treasurer of SGA, then presented the proposed fall 1995 budget for organizations. Before the budget was presented, Terrell Adgers, president of SGA, reminded the senate that they should pass a budget that diey are willing to stand behind. He then commented that all senators should keep in mind that it is late in the semester and orga nizations need to get their bud geted funds very soon. With the presentation of the budget came an onslaught of questions concerning the allot ment of money to different orga nizations. Discussion opened as to how much Intramurals really needed in its budget to pay the bill for the bag phone. It was noted at the end of the discussion about Intramurals that although they were allotted a large sum of money, Intramurals has the most participation of any organization receiving funding from SGA. Club Dramatica’s budget was also questioned because of the in creased amount the organization received this semester when com pared to the funds they were al lotted in fall 1994. Andre Clanton explained that the Finance Committee, com prised of North Hall President Tim Elmore and Nash Hall Presi dent Mike Ingeiick, felt diat the increased funding was justified because of the amount of activi ties that Cub £>ramatica spon sored in the past and the planned activities for diis semester. College Republicans and Stu- (Continued on Bade Page) SGA resists appeal to reinstate Cameron By TEQUELA MOORE On Oct. 2, senior class presi dent, Ellen Stanton, addressed the topic of amendments to the con stitution of the Smdent Govern ment Association in an appeal to reinstate Kelly Cameron as sopho more class president. Stanton said, to the executive board as well as the Senate and SGA, that Mr. Cameron is a good student on campus and he tries to better campus involvement. She also said that she felt no one else would want to fill the position. Student Government Association vice president-elect John Rodzicki replied, “Student guidelines are in place for a rea son and they should be followed.” He also added there were several students who were interested in filling the position as sophomore class president. Treasurer Andre Clanton ar gued, “The purpose of coming to college is not to be an SGA mem ber. Education comes first. A member needs to maintain cer tain standards and prove to them selves and their fellow members that they can perform the duties as a student as well as a represen tative.” According to the SGA consti tution, members must maintain a 2.0 GPA. At the same time, it does not state that you cannot be active in SGA if you are not a “member.” Apparently coming into this school year, Cameron held the office of sophomore class president. When he did not maintain the 2.0 GPA stated in the constitu tion to remain president, Mr. Cameron was asked to step down (Continued on Back Page)
