Vivian Vega had 40 assists and 32digs during the match. The Bishops hosted one of the Dixie’s toughest teams on Friday night and could not overcome the play of the Pride. Greensboro played a tough consistent match Jiiiithe Bishops couldn’t execute llie shots. The week started well for the Bishops as they thrubbed Chowan W. The Bishops played a steady iMch against the Braves and con- linue to prepare for the Dixie Tournament. The weekend was iotas good as Wesleyan dropped a pair of matches on the road to Shenandoah and Lebanon Valley. The second game of the week saw the Bishops traveling to Vir ginia Wesleyan, which was ranked 17th in the nation and 2nd in the South Region. “A very tough loss,” is all Vogel could say about the 4-0 loss. Although the play of the match was not four goals in Virginia Wesleyan’s way as far as possession goes, they converted on two comers, and picked up on an errant ball in the back. “They are organized and very physical,” said Vogel. “The goal just before half time hurt us a bit as far as momentum is con cerned.” The Bishops moved forward in the Dixie Conference by de feating conference foe Averett 1- 0. The Bishops took the lead at 67:00 on Joey Arment’s foal as he tucked away a pass from Daimeon Savage. Savage shot through from the midfield and beat Averett’s offside trap, then slotted the ball across the net to Arment as he streaked in follow ing the play. The win pushed the Bishops to 2-1-1 in the Dixie. “This was a good road win for us against a much improved Averett squad who is now 11-5-1,” said Head Coach Greg Vogel. The Bishops secured a 2-1 overtime victory over Lynchburg College on Saturday, pushing their record to 9-5-2. Lynchburg took the lead 10 minutes into the match but that was the only time they were to find the net. NCWC’s Josh Addison tied the match at the 24- minute mark. Daimeon Savage scored 6:36 into the 1st overtime to give the Bishops the sudden death victory. The Bishops have two matches left in the regular season: Christopher Newport and Greensboro. WOMEN’S SOCCER — The Lady Bishops (11-6-2, 5-0- 1) stretched the #5 team in the nation to the limit but the Eagles of Mary Washington converted the only goal in the 57th minute. “We played good team defense and counter attacked well,” said Rob Donnenwirth. “We had some chances to score but didn’t get our shots on frame. Mary Wash ington is a great team.” The Eagles outshot the Bishops 16-4. The latter part of the week saw a gut wrenching loss for the Bish ops. The Bishops played with only one starting back from the beginning of the season. Wes leyan scored with 10 minutes re maining in the contest off Alexa Kapetanakis’ 9th goal of the sea son. Thirteen minutes later, SCAD scored the equalizer. This was the result of no scoreboard on the field and the referees keep ing the time.’SCAD went on to win the game in overtime. The Bishops won the Dixie Conference Championship with late game heroics from senior Danyel Thomson against confer ence rival Methodist College. Thomson is the lone Bishop se nior and scored the game-winner with 4:40 remaining on Senior Day. The Bishops took a 1-0 lead on a corner kick which Tara Quigley finished. Methodist came back with two quick goals on counter attacks. The Bishops controlled the second half and finally equalized on a Betsy Jones header off a comer kick. “We played a great second half after an awful first half I am very happy for Danyel who deserves this for all the hard work she has put into this pro gram,” said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. By STEPHANIE HAWKINS Sports Editor The North Carolina Wesleyan volleyball team broke a five- match losing streak when they defeated Ferrum 15-9, 13-15, 16- 14, 15-13 on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Vivian Vega had 32 digs and 40 assists to help the Lady Bishops. Wesleyan coach Michon Lub bers said, “Defense was our game tonight.” Laura Hilbert had nine kills and Theresa Graninger, Renee Walcott, and Tabitha Wilcox had three blocks each. The Lady Bishops improved to 16-14. North Carolina Wesleyan lost their last home game 15-6, 15-9, 15-3 to Greensboro College on Friday, Oct. 23. “We did not ex ecute anything,” Wesleyan coach Michon Lubbers said. The Lady Bishops are 16-15, 6-4 in the Dixie Conference. They have four matches on the road before the conference tournament. *** Wesleyan fought in overtime, but could not come out on top as the women’s soccer team fell to Randolph-Macon 2-1 on Wednes day, Oct. 14. Jessica Mook scored early in the match for the Lady Bishops. Wesleyan held a 1 -0 lead until the Lady Yellow Jackets tied, the game at the 63-minute mark. Missy Derr scored the winning goal less than seen minutes into overtime. Randolph-Macon outshot Wesleyan 31-8, but Jen Foreman had 24 saves for the Lady Bishops. ■ North Carolina Wesleyan de feated Mary Washington 1-0 on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in men’s soccer. Enrico Giancroce buried the rebound off the goalkeeper in the 115th minute of the match. The Bishops improved to 7-4-2. Wesleyan coach Greg Vogel said. “We have been focusing on de fending during recent training ses sions.” Josh Morrison had seven saves for the Bishops. The North Carolina Wesleyan men’s soccer team fell to Vir ginia Wesleyan 4-0 on Saturday, Oct. 24. Vincent Sciullo scored three goals, but Drew Bartos’ goal late in the first half took the momen tum away from the Bishops.
