PAGE 6 — THE DECREE — NOVEMBER 20,1998 Sports Eight Lady Bishops make All-Conference By RENN\' TAYLOR The North Carolina Wes leyan’s Women’s soccer team landed eight players on the 1998 All-Dixie Conference Teams. The Bishops finished 5-0-1 in the Dixie Conference and won their sixth Dixie Conference Champi onship. The team has compiled a 24-1-2 Dixie Conference record in the last five seasons. Making the All-Dixie Confer ence First Team were backs Sh annon St. George and Alison Kirch, midfielders Jamie Funk and Betsy Jones, forward Alexa Kapetanakis, and goalkeeper Jen Foreman. St. George, a freshmen back from Newtown, Pa., was also named the Dixie Conference Co- Rookie of the Year. St. George is the third Battling Bishop player to be named Rookie of the Year in the last four seasons. St. George was an impact at the stopper po sition as she helped anchor a de fense which only allowed 0.69 goals per game in 1998. “Shannon plays with the com- fwsure of a senior,” said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. “She will be a major contributor in years to come.” Kirch, A freshman from Vir ginia Beach, Va., started the sea son at left back and moved to sweeper to fill in for injuries. “Alison plays with intelligence and heart,” said Donnenwirth. “We had to put her in the pres- Two volleyball players on Dixie second team The North Carolina Wes- leyan’s Volleyball Team’s Vivian Vega and Renee Walcott were named to the All-Dixie Confer ence Second Team. The Battling Bishops finished the season with a 19-18 record and in third place in the Dixie St. George wins ‘rookie of year’ in soccer play North Carolina Wesleyan’s Shannon St. Georgs was named the 1998 Dixie Conference Co- Rookie of the Year for women’s soccer. St. George, a freshmen back from Newtown, Pa., was also named First Team All-Dixie Con ference. St. George was an im pact at the stopper position as she helped anchor a defense which only allowed 0.69 goals per game in 1998. “This is a tremendous honor for Shannon,” said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. “She has a great understanding of the game and plays with great composure. We are looking forward to seeing her in a Battling Bishops’ uni form for the next three years.” This is the third Battling Bishop to receive this award in the last four years. St. George shares this honor with Jennifer Dodson of Fenoim College. Conference regular season. The Bishops’ 19 victories is the most achieved since the 1980-81 sea son. Vega, a junior setter from Wellington, Fla., led the Dixie Conference in digs with a 4.33 average per game. She also fin ished second in service aces (.67 per game) and sixth in assists (5.22 per game). Walcott, a junior from Med- field, Mass., led the Bishops with 2.62 kills per game vs. Dixie Con ference opponents. She also led the Bishops with .388 blocks per game and .480 blocks per game vs. Dixie opponents. Donnenwirth selected as 1998 coach of year Rob Donnenwirth was named the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Womens Soccer Coach of the Year for the 1998 season. Donnenwirth guided the Wesleyan women to the Dixie Conference Championship with a 5-0-1 record and posted an 11- 6-2 overall record. This was the fourth Conference Championship in five years for the Bishop women under Donnenwirth, who improved his overall coaching record to 62-32-9. The award marks the third time that Donnenwirth has been hon ored as the Coach of the Year with the other two times coming in 1994 and 1996. sure position of sweeper due to injuries and she did a fantastic job”. Funk, a junior from Baltimore, Md., was also the Bishops’ cap tain in 1998. Funk was a second team All-Dixie Conference selec tion in 1998. She finished the sea son with seven goals and six as sists despite playing with a se vere ankle sprain the second half of the season. “Jamie is our leader and she works tremendously hard to set a good example,” said Donnen wirth. Jones, a junior from Chapel Hill, was also a 1996 second team All-Dixie selection her freshmen year. Jones missed half of the 1997 season but came back this year with four goals and eight assists. Her biggest goal of the season was the game-tying goal vs. Methodist in the Dixie Con ference Championship. “Betsy is the most skilled player on the team,” said Donnenwirth. “It will be scary to see what she can do with an in- jury-free season.” Kapetanakis, a junior from Raleigh, was named first team All-Dixie for the third straight season. She was also named the Dixie Conference Rookie of the Year her freshmen season. Kapetanakis led the Bishops with nine goals and nine assists for 27 points. She is currently tied for second in career goals (37) and second in career points (98) in the North Carolina Wesleyan record books. “Every team we play against knows they need to tiy and stop Alexa,” said Donnenwirth. Goalkeeper Foreman, a junior from Wilton, Conn., cracks the first team after being named Sec ond Team All-Dixie her first two seasons. She is the all-time Wesleyan shutout leader with 32.5 shutouts in her career. Fore man is a defmite All-American candidate according to Coach Donnenwirth. “Jen had opponents scratching their heads with some of the saves she made this season,” said Donnenwirth. “Every oppwsing coach felt she was the best they had seen.” Making the All-Dixie Confer ence Second Team were back Tara Quigley and midfielder Danyel Thomson. Quigley, a junior from Pt. Pleasant, N.J., is a junior college transfer from Ocean Community College. Quigley provided lead ership in the backfield, which helped stabilize a young defen sive corps. “Tara plays with a contagious intensity and has a great under standing of the game,” said Donnenwirth. “We will look for her to take a bigger leadership role in 1999.” Thomson, the Bishops lone senior, from Syracuse, N.Y., fin ished her career by scoring five goals and adding three assists vs. Dixie Conference competition in 1998. Her biggest goal came on senior day as she scored the game- winning goal vs. Methodist in the Dixie Conference Championship in her last home game. “Danny epitomizes the phrase that hard work pays off,” said Donnenwirth. “She barely got any playing time her first year, but we couldn’t keep her off the field from that point on. We always recognized her importance and she has now been recognized for it.” Three Bishops picked for All-Dixie teams By RENNY TAYLOR The North Carolina Wes- leyan’s men’s soccer team landed three players on the 1998 All- Dixie Conference Teams. The Bishops finished 9-7-2, which is the best finish for the Battling Bishops since the 1989-90 sea son. Making the All-Dixie Confer ence First Team were midfielder Daimeon Savagae and forward Oscar Roa. Savage, A sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica, led the Bish ops with eight assists and also added two goals. Savage was named to the All-South and All- Conference second team as a freshman as well. “Daimeon brings tremendous experience to this program,” said Head Coach Greg Vogel. “He is the most pure playmaker this pro gram has seen in a long time.” Roa, A fieshman from Falls Church, Va., took the Dixie Con ference by storm and was also named the Dixie Conference Rookie of the Year. A deadly fin isher, Roa, scored 11 goals and added four assists in his first sea son of collegiate play. “Oscar quickly became a player to be reckoned with,” said Head Coach Greg Vogel. "He has great instincts and will only get better as he matures.” Making the All-Dixie Confer ence Second Team was Josh Addison, a junior midfielders from Richmond, Va. Addison led the Bishops with 31 jx)ints by scoring 12 goals and adding seven assists. Addison, the Bishops’ captain, bounced back from knee surgery in 1997 to become one of the best two-way midfielders in the Dixie Conference. “Josh deserves this award by work ethic alone,” said Head Coach Greg Vogel. “He has battled back from injuries that have knocked him out of portions of his freshmen and sophomore years.” Roa picked ‘rookie of year’ North Carolina Wesleyan College s Oscar Roa was named the 1998 Dixie Conference Rookie of the Year for men’s soc cer. Roa, a freshmen from Falls Church, Va., took the Dixie Con ference by storm and has become one of the conferences best goalscorers.
