PAGE 8 — THE DECREE — MARCH 9,2001 Top five ‘chick flicks’ and ‘guy movies By ERIK EVANS One can file movies away into several different categories. If it’s funny, it’s a comedy. If it’s sad, it s a drama. If it’s scary, it’s a horror. If it involves circus midg ets, a goat named Pepe, and six pounds of peanut butter, it’s not something you should be watch ing anyway, so chuck it out the window, go to church, and con fess your sins. The point is different movies are made for different people, and in some cases, different movies are made for different sexes; thus forging two new categories into the Dewey decimal system of film: the “guy movie” and the infamous “chick flick.” So, what’s the difference? There is an ancient Chinese se cret to making a good guy movie, and that secret is: guys are easily amused (Face it fellas, they al ready know). Okay, so it’s not ancient... or Chinese... or even a secret really, but it is the essential philosophi cal ingredient in this type of movie. Give us a coloring book and a box of crayons and we’re set for hours. The same principle applies to the guy movie. Give the average male a film with gra tuitous violence, a good guy, a bad guy, heavy machinery, Cameron Diaz, and a football, and he’ll never leave the theatre. Such details as storyhne or plot don’t really matter in a guy movie. Newbould said, “Carla and I want a very close relation ship with the people of eastern North Carolina; we intend to be actively involved not only in the life of the College, but also that of the surrounding community.” The Newboulds plan on mov ing to North Carolina in late sum mer to begin their work with the College and community. “Our intensity at both ends of the floor was outstanding to night,” commented Coach Th ompson after the game. The Bishop’s match up with Greensboro was very emotional as Wesleyan honored their six se niors: Green, Grandison, Earl, Walker, Hamm, and Lawrence. NCWC recorded the win, 75-67. Although their season ended with disappointment Wesleyan picked up some post season hon ors. Senior Fabian Lawrence was named First Team All Confer ence, while fellow classmate Chad Green was named Second Team. Freshman Keith Sudler was also named Second Team, as well as Co-Rookie of the Year. Now, the critic’s choice for the top five guy films: 5. Goodfellas (1990, Warner Brothers) Starring: Robert DiNero, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta The Lowdown: The true story of a young mobster (Liotta) and his life in the mob.
