Senior Sarah Stout Receives
Prestigious Education Scholarship
By Susan Best, Director of Development
Rocky Mount, NC
Sarah Stout, a senior elementary education major at North Carolina, is one of
10 students throughout the state who have been awarded a 2002 Mary Morrow-Edna
Richards Scholarship. Stout received the $1,000 scholarship from the North Carolina
Association of Educators (NCAE). The award was given in recognition of Stout’s
promise as a teacher and as part of NCAE’s commitment to encourage exceptional
students to enter the teaching profession.
Stout plans to teach first grade in North Carolina after graduation. She is a native
of Laurinburg, N.C., and a graduate of Scotland High School. Her parents are Jerry and
Nancy Stout of Laurinburg.
Stout is vice president of the student chapter of NCAE; is a member of Refuge, a
mmistries organization at Wesleyan; and is employed part-time as a work-study student
in the government documents area of the college library. Her
lobbies include basketball, singing, and writing poetry.
I was excited to receive the scholarship,” Stout said. “I was blessed. Seeing that
pay for my own schooling makes it better.”
Founded in 1956 and affiliated with The United Methodist Church, the College
enrolls just under 1,000 students on the main campus. A popular Adult Degree Program
that helps adults finish their bachelor’s degrees in several disciplines is available at the
Rocky Mount campus and at instructional branches in Raleigh/Research Triangle Park
and Goldsboro.
N.C. Wesleyan offers bachelor’s degrees in 21 majors. More than 70 percent
of full-time faculty hold the Ph.D. or highest degree in their field. Close to 40 percent
of students come from outside North Carolina. U.S. News & World Report has ranked
N.C. Wesleyan as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the South.
North Carolina Wesleyan Alumnus and Trustee
Establishes Scholarship
By Susan Best, Director of Development
Rocky Mount, NC
P. Kevin Kikoy, a 1976 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College and a Wesleyan
trustee, has established a generous new scholarship for Wesleyan students with financia
need.
“The Jane E. Clements Memorial Scholarship honors an exceptional woman whose
kindness and financial aid enabled me to go to Wesleyan,” Kikoy said. “In 1972,1 was
a young man about to graduate from high school who had no idea what to do with his
life. I needed guidance, mentoring, and an education, but I had no idea where I could
go to find the help I needed. Thankfully, Jane Clements, a single mother of six and the
mother of one of my best friends in high school, provided strong guidance that insured
that I would have an excellent education.”
Kikoy came to Wesleyan from a small rural town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland,
majored in political studies, played soccer, and was an honor student while working
his way through college. After graduation, he initiated a series of successful ventures
in computer technology and became CEO and chairman of Bluestone Software, Inc., a
company that he took public and which was subsequently acquked by Hewlett-Packard
Corporation in a strategic merger. Kikoy is currently a general partner with Baker
Capital in New York. He joined WesleyanAfs board of trustees last fall and serves as
chamnan of the trusteesAf development committee.
Wesleyan president Dr. Ian Newbould said, “We are delighted that Mr. Kikoy has
chosen to honor his benefactor by enabling other deserving students to attend Wesleyan.
His generous gift will make a difference in the lives of generations of students.”
