4 27 November 2002 Men’s Basketball RanJ^ctin the Top 25 in the Nation By Renny Taylor, SID November 5, 2002 Rocky Mount, NC: NC Wesleyan’s Men’s Basketball team has been ranked 25* in the nation by D3hoops.com. The Bishops received 102 votes and is the only school from the state of North Carolina to receive any votes. The D3 hoops.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches. Sports Information Directors and writers from across the country. Wesleyan is the defending Dixie Conference Champions and made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. Wesleyan is the Dixie Conference preseason favorite as voted on by the conference coaches, receiving seven out of eight first place votes. The Bishops return seven out of their eight top players. Bradley Blue (Dunn, NC / Midway H.S.) returns as the leading scorer with 18.4 points per game and has already been selected as a Dili News Preseason All-American. Last year he was a First Team All-Conference selection and was the Dixie Tournament Most Valuable Player. He was also a Second Team All-South selection. Junior point guard, Bobby Jenkins (New Smyrna Beach, FL / New Smyrna Beach H.S.) joined Blue on the All-Tournament Team. Another returner, Donta Jenkins (Oak City, NC / Roanoke H.S.) was the Dixie Rookie of the Year in 2001-2002, as does Keith Sudler (Fayetteville, NC / Westover H.S.), who was Rookie of the Year in 2000-2001 and a Second Team All-Conference selection lastseason. The Bishops return 97% of their scoring from a year ago, including their top nine scorers. Rob Smith (Albion, MI / Albion H.S.) was fourth in the nation with 96 blocked shots. Bobby Jenkins set a new school record with 79 three-pointers and Ryan Sinclair (Wilmington, NC / New Hanover H.S.) was right behind him with 59 makes behind the arc. A win would have assured the Bishops a spot in the Dixie Conference Tournament, but they couldn’t match the Pride’s scoring output as they lost, 1-5. Senior Shaun Oliveria ended his record-breaking career with Wesleyan’s lone goal in the contest. VOLLEYBALL (14-16,3-10): The volleyball team took on 3 Dixie Conference opponents last week. They dropped a mid-week match to Methodist, 0-3, on Wednesday. Deborah Porterfield (So.) served for 8 aces and had 11 kills. Hana Chelikowsky (Sr.) dished out 18 assists and Melissa Leonard added 22 digs. Wesleyan then split a pair of matches over the weekend. In the first match, the Bishops defeated Shenandoah, 3-1. Porterfield and Kendra Brewer (So.) each had 12 kills. Chelikowsky had 19 assists and Colleen Bennett (So.) had 13 assists. In their second match, the Bishops played well and gave Dixie front-runner Greensboro a run for their money before falling 1-3. Bennett led the team with 18 kills while Brewer had 15. Chelikowsky was the high player with 30 assists. The volleyball Bishops’ last regular season match is at Barton on Tuesday at 6:00. They then go to the Dixie Conference Tournament on Friday and play host school, Greensboro College, at 7:00 pm. WOMENS SOCCER (8-11,5-2): Wesleyan couldn’t quite pull off a win on Senior Day, even though the seniors did all they could before losing to Savannah College of Art & Design, 2-3. The Bishops trailed at the half, 1-2, with Senior Camil Velazquez scoring off a Kristi McGuire (Sr.) pass for Wesleyan’s first goal. In the second half, McGuire found Caitlin Sanderson (Sr.) on a comer kick for the second goal. Goalkeeper Rachael Whicker (Sr.) had 6 saves in the Bishops’ final regular season contest.
