By: Ron Fitzwater 8/14/03 N C Wesleyan Head Football Coach Jack Ginn “I have heard it said that the be ginning of some thing is always filled with excite ment. I can tell you, I believe that today.” With those words Jack Ginn became the first Football Coach in North Carolina Wesleyan History. June 17‘h 2003, the lobby of the Dunn Center held a modest crowd of press and supporters, they were there to hear NC Wesleyan Athletic Director John Thompson, introduced Jack Ginn to the Wesleyan Community, as the first Head Football Coach in school history. “I spoke to persons who have known Jack Ginn as a INSIDE Editorials F.vcnts 3 Sports 4-5 Rcmcmbranccs Student I.ifc 7 Journalism 8 student athlete and a coach. They all spoke of him as an out-standing person.” said Thompson, visibly proud to have seen this day come about. Upon introducing Coach Ginn, A/D Thopmson said with complete confidence, “We are quite certain he is the right man at the right time.” It certainly does seem to be true that Coach Ginn is the right man at the right time; “Ginn has experienced success at each stop he has made,” Thompson said. Ginn’s two most re cent seasons have been as Quarterback and Wide Receivers Coach at Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, WV (NCAA II), where he racked up “a combined 15-5 record with the offen sive unit setting 16 school records,” says Renny Taylor, NCWC Sports. After his initial hellos. Coach Ginn took a few moments to reflect upon his feelings and about what brought him here to NC Wesleyan. He told the crowd, “I am filled with excitement to be the first ever Head Football Coach of North Carolina Wesleyan. We have thirteen months until our first practice, a busy thirteen months. That’s thirteen months to recruit, equip and assemble 100 young men who want to be a part of history.” This didn’t seem to bother the coach, in fact, just the opposite—he seemed to welcome the challenge and spoke high ly of the future of football at Wesleyan: “We have an outstand- ing setting with all the ingredients needed to build a successful Division III Football program.” Coach Ginn thanked A/D Thompson and President Newbould for their confi dence in him and thanked his wife Sherry for “living the life of a coach’s wife.” College President Ian Newbold spoke of the time that was taken to select the first football coach. Echoing A/D Thompson, he said, “We are pleased we have the right man for the job.” Following his com ments, the President pre sented Coach Ginn with a new NCWC Football cap, laughingly saying that it was the only piece of foot ball equipment available right now. A question-and-answer session was held follow ing President Newbold’s cap presentation to Coach Ginn. When asked what was first on his list, Ginn said, “Well I have a list of I think there’s 34 things to accom plish in the first 100 days. A lot of that has to do with becoming familiar with the Cont. at “Football” pg. 5 22nd Annual Day for Wesleyan Sets New Record North Carolina Wesleyan College’s 22nd Annual Day for Wesleyan fundraising event held on Tuesday, September 16, set a new record of $449,684 in gifts and pledges. This year’s total was nearly 11 percent more than last year’s record- shattering tally of just over $405,000. Day for Wesleyan volunteer co-chairs Paul Bauer and Joseph Nelson announced the fundraising success at a Tuesday evening celebration on campus at the home of Wesleyan President Ian Newbould and Carla Newbould. "The Rocky Mount community supports Wesleyan in the most wonderful way imaginable," President Newbould told the crowd of Wesleyan faculty, staff, friends of the College, and members of the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce who gathered to celebrate the day’s activities. "Each year, we hope to do better than the year previous, and we’ve certainly accomplished that this year." Newbould said that Wesleyan’s students will directly benefit from the generosity of the Day for Wesleyan supporters. The Day for Wesleyan event is actually the culmination of a four-week effort by more than 100 volunteers from the campus and community who call on about 700 businesses and individuals to ask for donations and pledges.
