Page 12 Strive Friday, July 19, 1974 Now don’t expect too much from this article. I’m filling in for Dr. P. who evidently immersed himself in boron compounds and computer pro gramming. Dr. Purser, late of the nationally ranked N. C. Wesleyan netters, began the lessons with a “This is a racket” session. Such topics as how to hold the racket, where to serve and what “love” really means were covered along with detailed explanations of foot work and tennis etiquette. From that point the hardy group of souls who formed the tennis class worked on drop ball drills, serving, and toss ball drills. Not uncommon was the sight of tennis balls flying into the woods and the cry— “Homerun!” It truly was an experi ence—dodging the errant sphe roids, imploring Annette to bounce the ball before she hit it, watching Charlie develop that murderous backhand, and continually reminding Joyce to keep her wrist stiff. Dr, Purser and his able as sistant used all the available tennis expertise at their command to instruct such stalwarts as Margie, Sylvia, Tennis Anyone? crossword puzzle By Greg Williams Phyllis, Joyce, Annette, Sarah, Felicia, Cathy, Beulah, and Keith. In the advanced group were Beverly, Lynn, Marvin, and Phillip—sometimes at their end the ball could be seen crossing the net two or more times in succession. Charlie was in a category all his own. For some, the entire pro gram was worthwhile just to see Dr. Purser’s “beautiful legs.” For most, though, it was a challenge to pick up this new sport. The way in which this challenge was met indicates the success of the tennis program. Conserve Gos Compliments Of TERRY DAWES Taylor Hog Farm TaHx>ro, N.
